Time for a new car

Newer is always better.
I like Porsche 911s, but the XK is much more exotic.
I would also look at some XKRs, might be able to grab one for a good price.

The 911 is hands down a better drivers car - no way anyone can dispute that.
The XKR is waaaay better looking and has far more style - also indisputable.
One the street the XKR (5.0) is going to be faster than a 911 short of a GTx or turbo but on a track a base 911 is far better. Are you going to ever track your car? If not go XKR unless you just love the P car look; which is a beautiful car.

Don't Go to the Dark Side....
Lad
I've spent over forty years in the family and with all that Jaguar has problems with, I love the cars. I'm a bigger fan of Jaguar Cars LTD than of JC INC. the post privatization company, but the XK is a great modern effort.
The 5.0 Direct injected engine is a true marvel, more power, better mileage and cleaner burning or greener. When I buy a used Jaguar I go out and look at everything out there, I mean 20 -30 cars and find the best one, that shows care and pride of ownership and the most service history possible. Performance versions....evaluate the owner /driver very carefully, because you have to trust his word about how he/she has used /abused the car. If possible get the Jaguar DDW print out on the service history. Very important !
Drive the car for initial observation, look , listen and feel everything. Drive it over the Motorway, over a grade crossing, find a spot with a crest and drive diagonally across to flex the chassis. Creaks , groans, thumps, rumbles and how does it shift. How does it turn. Brakes ok ?
Take a friend as a shot gun and the make notes and listen. Make a checklist to write down all on. If the car becomes a serious candidate everything changes. Now the real work begins.
If you are close to a Jaguar dealer get a free pre sale MPI Multi Point Inspection. They will give you the real picture. Even if you have your own guy Jaguar will read codes and give you the best ammunition to go back to the owner to bargain. Car fax is not very accurate but can show some title /damage history. Everything you find now will save you thousands later so be diligent, you will glad later. There are always thing below the surface that can pop up later but that is a used car.
I'm working a buyers guide that I will post as a sticky later.
Good Luck
Remember any clown can and do own Porsches....
Owning a Jaguar is its own reward.
Feel free to contact me.
Cheers Robert

Most 911's are yawner's in the looks department. Some color combo's are stunning though. XK to me is a just a cooler car all around. I was thinking of a 911 when I bought the XK, but in the end... I felt more comfortable owning another Jag.
How about an Aston if you want to change marques?

Huge P car fan. Had several. Did what you are thinking about. sold off my 09 911s and got an 11 XKR.
Never really really understood the difference between the terms sports car and GT car. (thought it was one of those automotive definitions that really meant nothing anymore like "roadster")
The 911 vs XKR is exactly that difference. If you want the 911 to sing, you have to drive it around at 7/10 all the time. Get caught bubbling along in 6th at 1600 rpm's and you are completely flat footed. Never had a turbo, it might be different, but the s is useless unitl you get to above 3500
Completly depends on your driving style. As I approach 50, I'm just too lazy to drive around at 7/10 just to stay ready for that punk in the slammed honda. Guess the next step in my eveloution will be not to care about the punk in the honda...
These cars are like night and day. It will not come down to asthetics..

Still gotta respect the 911. It is a remakable device. Reliable as an ice box and above 7/10ths a fun thing to drive.

There is not one Porsche 911 turbo, from the 930 onward, I have not creamed over, looks wise. When that 930 came out, I would literally laugh with pleasure every time I saw one. A ballsy ballsy look.
So I got one, modified the holy hell out of it, and am pleased as punch with it. To me, the narrow body, normally aspirated Porsche look IS pretty damn boring. But widen the hips and preferably add boost, and you are good to go
The XKR, though, gets compliments from a much broader slice of the viewing public, in my experience. In comparison, it is quite rare. And that blown 5.0 engine is just a sweetheart. Such an easy car to drive, from 1/10 to 8/10. Higher than that, and the track is the only safe option. Haven't done that with the Jag, but others here report good things

My previous car was a modded 996 turbo. It is the car I always wanted. When it was time for a new car, my final 2 choices were a 997 turbo S and jag Xkr-s. I use my car for a daily driver for which both are suitable. Advantages of the RS jag vs 997 turbo Porsche were looks, sound, stereo, convienence features (controls on steering wheel for ex), and cargo space. Porsche advantages were performance, resale value, and Porsche community (Porsche club of America - track days, corrals at races, etc). I think the comparison between the Xkr and 997 would be similar, except less of a performance gap (or no gap).
Drive both cars and I think you will know which one you like better, as they look and drive very differently.

After I sold my 2011 XKR 175 I was looking for a replacement. I considered Porsche 911 Carrera S, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Maserati Granturismo, Nissan GT-R and a new 2013 XKR fully loaded or XKR-S.
I decided on the another XKR fully loaded with dynamic pack and performance exhaust. I never liked the 911 because it never gave me that goofy smile on my face. Every time I reach for a set of keys between my cars I always want to take the XKR. Just looking at it puts that goofy smile on my face. The 911 just seemed cheap in comparison to the XKR. I was looking for a great fast GT street car. The 911 felt like a cheap toy and the GT-R was too track oriented. Two months after I'm very pleased with my decision.

Like everyone says 911 will out perform the XK as it's more nimble and better technology. As far as looks...I'm not sure. In my opinion the X150 is better looking but whenever I cruise with my buddy with a 997.1 Turbo, it seems most people gravitate towards his car. Last weekend I went cruising with my buddy with a Viper and my other friend who just got a 2013 991 Carrera S with the Aerokit Cup and when we stopped at a yogurt place, most peeps was looking at the 991 and Viper. Which I don't mind as no one would then touch my XKR.
