Default Trap door - convertible top

I’m not sure what to call this part, but it’s a sliding trap door on the upper surface right behind the drivers door. There is one on both sides. This slide out of the way when the top is up and slides in place to cover the hole up when the top is down. I can add pics later if I need to. But, the issue is that this part appears to have jumped out of track and it popped the cord that pulls it into place when the top goes down. So right now it’s just stuck out of the way and my car has a 3” x 6” rectangular hole that is left uncover s when the top is down. I called jag dealership and was told u have to buy the entire interior panel at about $1000 to get this part. Anyone else had issues with this ?

you can just buy the piston and string I believe. I can't recall who sells it though.

Jaguar has a useful TSB on repairing the sliders, with part numbers. I have attached it. If only the string is broken some people have done DIY repairs documented here. Search for 'slide' or 'slider' in this group.

I had to do that work to get the quarter window regulator out when the cable jump off track. I don't see how any one could get that quarter panel out and back in place in a mere 42 minutes. The allowance from JLR.

I did manage to tie the string back together but after a little time it happened again , I believe the plunger or piston needs replaced.

Hi there, same happened with my 2007 XKR...just reconnected the string to the piston, and everything is working fine.
No need to spend a fortune, just some patience.
cheers,

With mine not only is the string broke(I’m sure I can fix this) but it seems to no longer slide smoothly in the tracks. Looks like it has red grease all over the tracks like maybe the previous owner had issues and greased this area. I probably need to pull this apart to look at it closer.

Joel, I don't know what type of grease was used but it may have attacked the plastic. If that is the case you will need to find a replacement inner quarter panel. In any case you will need to pull the inner Q/P out to determine the extent of the problem and effect repairs.

Thanks everyone. Great input! I’ll follow up when I get in this. Hoping I can repair it to be functional.

I've got the problem with both sliders.

The cables still have the loops. I just can't feel underneath the sliders to figure out where to hook the loops
