Trip to the Dealership

Trip to the Dealership
Mother Nature was very kind to me yesterday. Early Nov. up here is usually Cold and good chance of snow, but yesterday was sunny and temps way above normal (72 degrees)
I had an appointment at my nearest Jag Dealership (125 mile way) to service my (new to me) 2010 XK Convert.
It was the first chance I had to take it on the Interstate as I've only had it for less than a month.
What a great highway vehicle, our Interstate has a posted 75 mph limit, but most everyone runs about 5 mph over. So I set the cruise at 80 mph and settled back for a nice 2 1/2 hr ride.
Scary how much performance the car had with so little effort, cruising at 80 mph and come up on a convoy of 16 wheelers who are doing 70 mph, just a little bit of peddle to pass the group and you look down and you're doing 115 mph. :>
Arrived at the Dealership about 1/2 hour early, check me right in, sat down with the Service Manager and went over what I wanted done. I told him what I wanted, he made a few suggestions and we settled on doing a 10 year maintenance vs. a 50K check up.
So I got a complete flush and replacement on the fluids for Engine Coolant, Power Steering , Brakes and rear diff.
We discussed the Transmission but he told me they don't like to do a fluid exchange w/o dropping the pan, they have had a few that when the fluids were changed it stirred up the slug on the bottom of the pan that really screwed up the trans. We'll talk about it when you have a lot more miles on it. OM doesn't even list a fluid change date or mileage. I had concerns about my battery, it showed it was 6 years old, they tested it and found it was about 60%, so I had them put in a new one. Even with a new one the recommended a Battery Tender when I put it away for the next 5 months.
They did a Courtesy Inspection and completed a Vehicle Report Card. I asked about the brakes and they said even though it didn't show up on CarFAX, the brakes had been done , new pads and rotors a few thousand miles ago using the same stuff they would have used. They did tell me I had a very clean and well cared for XK.
So when it was all done, lowered the top and took a beautiful cruise home. Going down doing 80 mph the car registered 22 mpg, going back I took advantage of a sunny day and set the cruise control at 69 mph and registered 26.2 mpg.
Staff was very professional, answered all my questions, and made good suggestions. Service was not cheap, but fell within my estimated cost, something I had 17 years experience with dealing with my BMW Dealership and my Z4
I love my XK !!

Glad to hear it went well. I'm assuming you waited at the dealership while this work was done? How long was the wait? I went in for a trans and diff fluid change a while back, and it took them over a week to get the car back to me.
I believe the procedure says to replace the pan when changing the trans fluid, so the pan needs to be dropped either way. If I had to take a guess, they probably just didn't want to do it because it's a fairly involved process compared to a lot of other cars. A local indie mechanic told me he didn't want to do the trans fluid change because it was too much work, which is why I ended up going to the dealer.

Took 3 1/2 hours, waited,
Nice lounge, Coffee,/Cappuccino Machine, ref with water and Coke, plus choice of snacks, TV and they brought me the days USA Paper and Wall Street Journal.
It was also a dealership for BMW;s Mini's, & Land Rovers, so with such a nice day walked the parking lot. Not much new inventory, salesman said the Covid has really hurt production over in England. They had two new Jags in the showroom, one really nice F, but with a sticker price of 98K was a little rich for my blood.
Land Rover had one new vehicle in the showroom, BMW was much better, but no Z's. Time went pretty quickly.

With all the fluid changes and new battery, just under $ 1,500
Parts were $654, Labor was $732, Shop fee's $50, tax $42.
This may seem a lot to some, but at 76 I'm not going to crawl around and do it my self, and I know the local garages around me would find this service above their ability to do it correctly.
Again, if you own a Jag, you don't ask "How Much" :>)

When you get ready to change the trans fluid, your BMW dealership is very familiar with the transmission since many of their cars use the same one, as does Hyundai and Audi. They use the same liquid gold as Jaguar if you want OEM. Frankly a reputable tranny shop is prolly very familiar with our transmissions. Nice to see you taking good care of it.

The closest Jag dealer to me is about 40 miles, and the last time I was there they programmed a key for me (before I had SDD) but they must have not had external power attached, as when I drove away the entire dash lit up with warnings.
I immediately went back in and they tried to sell me a new battery for like $390.
I didn't do that.

For the 6 speed zf box it is indeed best to change the filter with the fluid especially if its old fluid- ZF advise a new sump pan/filter (it's integrated) every time. Its about 2 hours start to finish with drain time. Your local ZF agent/auto box specialist would be a far better bet. The genuine zf lifeguard 6 is indeed liquid gold prices but in the UK at least smith and allan sell the same fluid for £5 a litre- its basically a shell fluid with additives.

The problem with the pan drop and drain process is not all of the fluid is removed, approx 3 litres of old fluid in the torque convertor remains. I took mine to the nearest main dealer and had a complete flush AND new pan & sleeve installed.

My tranny was due to be done 20th Nov by these people
https://www.mackie-transmission.com/
They are a ZF master centre and do a slow flush that removes 99% of LG6 from the tranny and TC. They also change the pan. Cost is £450 max with a 10% discount for UK forum members.
Sadly have had to cancel due to lockdown, but with 55k miles on the clock I still have time. Will rebook in the Spring as Glasgow in Winter months is bitter by UK standards

Bought the 2010 XK from a Cadillac Dealer in NW Michigan, 53,000 + on the OD, bought it this past Oct.
The CarFAX says it was a FL car, I have the owners location on the GPS but no name, (they did not 0 out that info.
Would love to know who owned it, just to get some history on maintenance and any re-occurring problems I have to watch.
So far it's been a great car, no problems, very well taken care of.
Let me know if this was yours.

It's hard to hide a car that was driven hard and put away wet. The finish, both outside and interior, carpet, paint, tires and rims.
Pretty easy to tell a car that's been cared for, and the CarFAX comes back listing all the service done regularly over the past 10 years.
The other nice thing, is when the Dealer gives it a through once over in addition to doing the 10 year maintenance and mentioned how clean it is.
Ya, I'd love to find the owner, but so far all's good.

Sounds like a fine car. Mine was also an early 2010 and had 25000 miles >>vin SAJWA4GB3ALB32910 when it was traded in June 2020. Mine also had chrome wheels and side vents which while a bit gaudy, worked well for this Molton Silver color. Best of luck with your ride!
If anyone ends up with my past ride, I'd be happy to share my service records beyond what is on car fax.

Nice car: a suggestion on tracking down prior maintenance history: take the previous owner’s address and search for Jag dealers in the vicinity, call and give them the last 5 off the VIN and see if they’ve serviced it. They might part with its history. Just a thought.
Also, re the tranny, I just had the fluid in a ZF5HP24 (X308) changed out at an independent transmission shop. The ZF5 branded fluid was abut $23 a liter, a darn sight cheaper than Jag Gold in a Bottle.

Don't use dealership unless you hate money and eager to get rid of all of it.
From 2010 it is way past overdue on transmission fluid and filter change. They are not a lifetime fill, you will make it the end of lifetime fill unless you change it soon.
