Which is the true successor to the E-Type?

Xjs?
Popular Mechanics calling the Jaguar XJS the successor to the E-Type and 1 of the hottest 100 cars made ever:
The 100 Hottest Cars of All Time - Popular Mechanics
The current XK model ranked 84 of 100 FYI while the E-type was ranked 5th over all. Many other Jaguar models on the list. The Jaguar XJ13 is ranked 3rd over all. The Ferrari 250 GTO takes 1st (IMO the E-type shown looks better but may not have had the performance of Ferrari at the time).

In what way do you feel the XK doesn't fulfill a similar role/position in the Jaguar line-up? The XKE had grown in size, weight, luxury appointments...and dare I say grand touring credentials, and was Jaguar's only sports/GT model during its production. The XK8 and XK Series were also the only sports/GT models during their production through to 2013.

But I don't see a reasonably everyday car, that has many similar competitors being a true successor to something that had no peers and will be remembered for ever!
Yes I have..

I understand the groundbreaking aspect of this debate, but by that standard then the iPhone is also a successor to the XKE. In automotive terms the XK is the natural evolution of the XKE. The F-type is not a GT car. That alone puts it out of the family tree.
Plus I may be completely alone here, but I think the F-type is awful. Does that get me kicked out of the forum on my first day? It looks like a robot, has a price point and that is way out of reach from its target audience. It just seems very un Jaguar-like. Almost vulgar. Not a bad ride (driven one) admittedly.

There seems to be some debate over whether the E-Type was a sports car or a GT car. Seems to me that earlier ones tended to be more sport, whereas the V12 models were more GT.

Is $100,000 Too Much?
Though the Porsche 911 may be the car that's most frequently compared to the F-Type, it is a pair of Mercedes that more closely resemble the F-Type in both driving dynamics and spirit. The two AMG SL models and the SLS Roadster are also rear-drive, tire-smoking rides with an audible flair for the dramatic.
More importantly, their performance is virtually identical to the 2014 Jaguar F-Type V8 S. Both the SLS Roadster and V12-powered SL65 put down nearly equal 0-60 and quarter-mile times as the F-Type (we've yet to test an SL63). The Jag stopped in a shorter distance than both, but the Mercedes boasts more grip. The slalom was a wash.
Despite such similarities, the SL63 starts at $147,300, while the SLS and SL65 top $210,000. The F-Type V8 S starts off at $92,895, with our loaded test car hitting the register at $105,620 with its Performance, Vision, Premium and Extended Leather packages. Suddenly the criticisms of the F-Type being too expensive are less convincing.
