Had bought a cheap key fob (new shape) from ebay . Just to see if i could transfer the circuit board and other bits from my spare old style XK key fob , Into the new shape fob . I have been using a very hot knife to melt and trim bits away from inside the newer shape fob to see if i could fit mine in , it more or less will fit in but now have 2 sides of the circuit board to trim off with a tool from the widest end of circuit board . It could fit

I like the look of the new key compared to the old flimsy current one . i read some one done it using the old heavy key fob from the x351 xj . But will try this out . (might not be able to but hey ho ) in the new shape fob they have a shorter key inside the fob . xj, xf,xe ftype etc all have same fob now LR to . would just get the blank key cut . got bits to trim yet and could ruin the spare fob worse case , But give it a go

This is a good idea because the old fobs turn into trash too quickly.
For testing purposes, how about getting a spare fob? It can be tested if it still transmitting signal before and after the PCB is cut without having it be programmed to any given car. Wondering if the buttons line up and be as responsive when pressed.

My XJ and your XKR share the same 5.0L SC engine, which is known for defective water pumps. Other than that, my 2013 XJ has not been "littered with faults" as you claim. If you want a brand that is littered with faults with frequent and expensive repairs, look no further than any out-of-warranty MBZ, and particularly the S-Class.
