Holy moly! - just went to order a MirrorTap, and for a $30 product that weighs the square root of bugger-all, they want $50 postage

Do they wrap it in platinum or something? If I lived in the US, shipping (if I choose USPS First Class mail) is free.

Any of you stateside guys prepared to be a drop box and post it on for me? - I'll PayPal the postage to you, plus some beer money. PM me if you're up for it.

If you don't find it on Amazon let me know and I'll order a second one and send it to you.

Thanks, MaximA - I should have thought to search for alternative sources. Actually, found an even cheaper one ($9.50) that will ship to the UK for $9.49:

Great! 50 bucks to ship a wire is crazy!

Keep in mind that its made by someone else. The cord quality is different (not necessarily worse). They are using phone cord whereas MirrorTap has a mesh sleeve that more closely matches OEM cabling. Again, this might not matter to you. I just wanted to make sure you're aware of the difference.

Thanks, Hamish - the cable is actually closer to the original Valentine type, if you look at their video. I'm not fussed, so long as it works and isn't ugly.

Hey just so you guys know, making a stealth cable is super-easy and doesn't have to cost you $30.

Here is a link to a write-up I did years ago on a Nissan Armada:

DIY Invisicord/Stealth Cord & Radar Hardwire - Nissan Armada Forum: Armada & Infiniti QX56 Forums

And here is a link to a write-up I did on a straight up hardwire of a radar detector in the XK:

Only real difference is that the DIY cable doesn't have the in-line fuse, but that would be easy to add too.

Meh; I've already ordered my $9.50 one. My energy levels are so up & down that I don't need any extra blockers that would put me off doing the job.

Hamish. Where do you crack open the mirror to tap the wires? Is it the mirror part itself or the part that attaches to the Windshield?
Thanks!

The plastic covers for the mount on the screen is what you remove:

I really like the V-1 mirror mount but you fooled me!!

I want it installed IN the mirror.

Like this:

Pretty cool but they wanted another $500 on top of the V-1 which was beyond me!

Hdavidson, thanks for the info. Did you actually use a BV1-2014? Could not find a 2114. Which wire colors in the mirror connector are hot and ground for the tap? Sorry, I could not tell from the pictures. Finally, could the mount be adjusted so the V1 is closer to the bottom of the mirror, thus higher for better range? I want to use in a 2014 XKR. Thanks in advance.

I installed mine today. I am not near as quick as you are as it probably took me 15 minutes. I learned that it is the far side of the plug that the tap goes into the back of and that the wires are stuffed into the mirror. By pulling the wires from the mirror there is enough slack in the harness to push the pins in.

Thanks for a great illustrated install of something that really cleans up the dash of the car with the detector.

I bought the tap from Amazon. It is described as "PerformancePackage Mirror Wire Power Cord with Inline Fuse RJ11 - Valentine V1 Radar Detector"

I haven't purchased a mount at this time.

I didn't take any pictures so I'm not able to help there. The pictures at the start of the thread are great and I followed them.

Thanks to everyone in this thread I now have a way to power the tiny screen I wanted to add by my mirror for a backup camera without running wires through the roof or a-pillar.
