All that these things do is send signals back and forth over wires using protocols. As far as shade tree mechanics using non approved equipment, I can tell you that some of us can do things the dealership can only dream of.
If you are indeed in Chicago area, i would love to meet up sometime. Maybe buy you lunch to show me what "can-be" with my XK. I'd like to learn whatever I can to get the full utility out of this car. Seems so much just under the surface.
