Guys, took one of BMW's in for a recall. The per-hour labor charge was $340 at this Ft Lauderdale BMW dealer. Someone told me that most dealers make their money in the shop...
Anyone have a latest Jag per-hour dealer cost in the US?
Damn glad I can do my own work.

Just too bad he doesn't get to take but a fraction of that home. I thought it was getting a bit ridiculous 25 years ago when our local Ford dealer moved out on the loop into a brand new facility. I went in to get something and the parts department had real marble countertops. I think a lot of dealers overinvested in facility. I don't want to subsidize everyone's free caffè latte while they wait for their oil change. Put in a Starbucks and let them pay $6 for their own latte. Either DIY or find an indy who doesn't offer free latte.

From Europe: in the Wiesbaden area, Germany, the local Volkswagen Center have just overtaken the official Jaguar dealership nearby, with an hourly rate >> 200€. result: regular 60,000 mile service of a new Beetle (no repairs) at around 900 €. Plus car back with (new) problem due to service manipulation. Never again.

Manufacturers wield a lot of power. They expect xxx-facility standards to be met and want to convey xxx-image. Sometimes the franchised dealers undertake massive facility overhauls only because they're forced to.
I spent 30 years working at dealerships, starting in the late 70s. Todays dealerships, IMO, are often very sterile and unwelcoming. Not only in appearance and general atmosphere but in the way staff are trained as well.
Cheers

As far as labor rate, I'm not sure exactly. My son got quoted $1400 to do rear brakes on his XFRS. Probably 1/2 is parts cost but I believe that is a bit high.

Many, many places say "You need new calipers" and charge an additional $1000 for that complete falsehood. They probably wire brush the old ones and resell to the next guy as "rebuilt" for another $1000.

Agreed. Never, in all my shadetreeing years, have I seen a failed caliper. Oh, I screwed one up once, by being too vigorous at cleaning the area around the dust boots. But that was a 45 min fix with a $2 part.

GM dealer working on my old Saab 900 Turbo claimed the same - brake pad pins were rusted, so they couldn't remove them - took the vehicle home, drilled out the rusted pins and did the job myself. Never went there again.
