Default Water Pump Replacement

My water pump in growling on my '08 XKR, so time to replace it. Jag original pumps seem to be around $250, whereas Eurospare, Airtex, Beck/Arnley and other aftermarket ones are only around $50. Should I buy the Jag one or are there any particular OEM aftermarket ones that are good but cheaper? also, anything else I should replace while at that stage of tear down? thnx

PEP Boys has a good one that i'm using now. The gasket is just as important, I would avoid paper ones unless you buy a pump with an 'as-cast' mating surface. Check the 'waterpump replacement' sticky for more info.

If you remove the coolant manifold, it would be a good time to replace the thermostat. At that point you will need to replace 3 gaskets (2 for the manifold, 1 for the thermostat) that only Jaguar sells, but they are pretty cheap.

You do not need to remove the manifold on an R, and due to the difficult to get to valley hose connector on the bottom of the manifold, I'd avoid trying. You knacker that hose and your day gets a whole lot worse.

Yeah its kind of a pain, should be the last hose you undo. I couldn't get the pump out without removing the manifold. Maybe its me, but it also made it easier to clean and install the pump when the manifold is out of the way.

But how long did that oem pump last you? Do you think the aftermarkets will last as long?

@64k miles, I replaced mine as a preventative maintenance and a "well, while i'm here..." kind of thing. It started leaking @76k miles from the paper gasket, and pump mating surface. That's when I replaced it with a metal gasket type and a pump with a machined surface. Haven't had an issue since.

I'm sure the OEM pump will last a while and they are relatively easy to swap out, but in my experience .... GAFF (gaskets always fail first). If you're doing a big maintenance job like i did, then replace it. If you just want to replace the pump/gasket, you can probably wait till 100,000 miles or more without an issue.

I thought I did a reply but it doesn't appear to be here - have the mods deleted it? All I mentioned was contact Berkshire Jags in England - they do the OEM Pumps for about $70 along with the header tank etc plus a load of advice - they have simply gone to the manufacturer direct. Very useful resource.

I've read on the forum about someone using an AC Delco pump who experienced over heating problems. On close observation the ports were a bit small than the OEM pump. I believe it was on a 5l engine. For a few dollars more I would go OEM unless the aftermarket pump was the holy grail.

Eurospares is the only official OE supplier for JLR. I have begun using them as a supplier over the last year and have been impressed so far, finding parts to be equal in quality to original supplied parts.
