Hi guys

Up and running again, slept like 18hrs after the journey... Do not know how I was able to write my summery of the trip before having a rest, must still have been high on adrenalin

I do not know why Jaguar here do not preform the service, or actually advice against it.

Here is what was done

New transmission oil pan,
New screws and a guide sleeve.
Mechatronic is removed and replaced, the converter is air leaned and something about sealing glasses... ??? Google translate from German..

For those of you that choose not to do, I do not think that it will be a major problem, you will just loose a bit of smoothness and the changes will not be fast..

My local indi offered a oil flush, but I think that would be like peeing in you pants, and most of us still remember that is only fun for a short time.

Coincidentally, the English show Fifth Gear, also highly recommend to do the transmission oil change, if you purchase a XK 2008 plus...

Think somebody asked for the contact details.

I'm taking my XJ X358 2.7 Tdvi into one of only 2 ZF (GB) A rated partners in the UK I believe, its called Mackies Transmissions, there a thread here about it.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/u...y-tour-111085/

The cars currently on 61.5k and is running fine with no transmission issues, but I feel its good to get done for sure.
I'll be asking them to look at the rear diff with a view to a possible fluid change there too.

I have the reassurance of knowing that my car is in good hands.
By the by, Mackies Transmissions have offered us ( as seen in the thread link above ) the opportunity of a factory tour, see whats involved, a short presentation by the MD and they're also laying on refreshments and finger food

Its a great opportunity for a Jag meet in Scotland and also getting to know the best ZF Transmission shop in Scotland.........there's also talk of discounts possible for forum members, but I should know more on Monday after my visit.

I got a email from a Joe Laubinger from ZF in the states. He said that ZF DOES NOT do the work themselves here. He recommended a Bosche Auto Care Center in my area, to go to their website. This was the timeframe they recommended for fluid changes:

Fluid drain and refill every 60,000 miles. If you drive spiritedly, in bad conditions, or up mountains every 50,000 miles. Thats it!

Drain and refill? Then why replace the pan?

I asked whether I could just drain and fill the transmission at 60k miles in another thread, and the response was, "What would be the point?"

The filter is an integral part of the pan I believe, as stated earlier.

Sure a drain / refill is better than nothing, but would you change your engine oil without renewing your filter?

Hey Alan & thanks for the compliments.....got her last week for my 50th.....I love it.

The size, the power, the economy and space make it all pretty addictive to drive. I'm just tweaking a few things here n there and adding my own touches to get her to where I want her to be, then all will be good hopefully.

As mentioned, the next part of that process is the transmission fluid service

Found this kit on e-bay but it $175 sounds too good to be true...

ZF Transmission Oil Pan Filter Kit 5 Quarts Trans Fluid BMW Jaguar | eBay
The kits are around $225ish... 2.5 hours labor. I would buy from ZF supplier, not Ebay. There's a sticky on this forum of place in CA that is a great ZF supplier.

We had a Seattle Jag Club Tech session At Eastside Transmission in Bellevue where they showed us a Land Rover ZF being rebuilt. It was similar model to the XK8 a 5HP24; they recommend changing fluid at 50K-60K. Unfortunately this model tranny has a weakness in the fwd clutch housing (they crack from fatique around 60K) so changing oil doesn't help.
This happened to my wife's XK8 at 65K ($6000!) but it's NOT a problem for our XK trannies, ZF has increase thickness of clutch housing..............

So...........do those fluid changes at 50K or so............lifetime means life of the fluid not the transmission! Just like wheel bearings and U joints.................

Cheers, Adrian
