Two thoughts:

Isn't Mahle a company manufacturing OEM filters? If so - they are 100% the same.

How to compare one oil filter to the other? I believe the only qualities we can compare are the visible factors like "perceived" quality, fitting etc. Where in reality a better filter means the highest flow with the highest "cleaning" capability (which are opposing to each other )

Frankly I would not expect any outcome of this discussion. Choose reputable brand and replace it often

In terms of oil filters it really needs to meet or exceed to maximum flow rate of the jaguar oem, whilst still doing a good job of filtration. I can recall around 15 years ago there was a trend for people with classics such as xk120 'upgrading' to modern metal 'spin on' type filters. The kits were quite dear, often over £100, and sold on the basis of simplifying oil changes going forward. If however you read the spec, in some cases maximum flow rates were half of the jaguar original!

The cost difference between OEM and other brands isn't worth it IMO. When the car is on a lift, I want to see a Jaguar everything; no Napa and Pep Boys.

Baldwin filters are highly recommended for any marque & model they have a filter for.

If in doubt, cut a few different brands open and see how they are made. Mini brands that sell filters do not manufacture the filters themselves but have other companies produce filters for them and those companies tend to use the same components depending on the brand placing the order. Sometimes youll find OEM filters have slight differences than the aftermarket brands but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re better or worse so it’s always good to look.

heres a good reference https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/th...ilters.176344/

One..NEVER EVER use fram.
two .. I have found that NAPA filters are quite good, and much more affordable than the KN etc ones.
Check it out for your self and you'll be surprised.

I've always used K&N oil filters. They're high quality and Iove the fact that they have a socket adapter on the bottom them to make installation and removal a breeze (especially if your oil filter is in a tight area).

It is my understanding that Mann is the manufacturer for the Jaguar OEM filters. But who knows. 2020 has been so screwed up the OEMs could be made by elves and Tinkerbell.

A few years back I found a very thorough, scientific test of oil filters online and Mobil 1 was rated the best. I'm not sure where I saw it but you may can dig it up. Mobil 1 is consistently rated the best oil as well and their prices reflect it for both oil and filters. They are easy to find in most any parts store or online for any vehicle. Most of the other brands are owned by some corporate overlord and the only difference is the labels they slap on them. Purolator. Fram. Etc. Crap. BTW Jaguar does not make their own oil filters.

This is not the study I referred to earlier but another good one that came to the same conclusion..

Indeed, as I said in post #7....the response was "to save money" and to that I say what money? OEM filters are cheap, not to be rude but if saving a $1 is that important in this example then there are other problems that need looking after...

I think I probably read the same article as there was a huge discussion on the hellcat forum about which filter is best for our hellcats and they also rated the mobil1 as a top notch a filter along with the wicks and the OEM Mopar filter and the Mopar SRT filter which seems to be in upgraded wicks filter. As I said earlier I did my own research and cut a bunch of the filters in half the way they were constructed and the materials that they used and my research showed that the mobile one filter in the SRT filter in the wicks filter and the STP extended life filter looked extremely similar although there were slight variations in the surface finish of the various plates inside the photos of the medium together as well as small changes in the structural parts. Most important advice is to never use a Fram

Yes but that $1 can mean the difference between Hulu and Hulu +. Kidding of course. To those who are making claims that X filter is crap and Y filter is better, you've just turned this into another oil thread but that's ok. I enjoy those too. My rationale for Wix, they filter my oil as best I can tell. Well that and I lack preparedness. I would happily use an OEM if I were smart enough to order one in advance of needing it.

Edit: looking at mosesbotbol's subsequent post, I should clarify my reference to various filter comparisons was the non OEM type.

The Jag XK filter "fits" on the Aston Martin V8, but the spring rates inside are different. If something happens due to the filter and it's not an AM filter; be ready to lick wounds. I'd imagine it's the same with Jaguar. Filter causes an engine problem and Jaguar will be quick to point out the brand filter.

Someone on my AM forum had an AM oil filter implode or something like that. Destroyed the engine & AM paid for a new engine. Fram & Wix are not going to pay for your engine if the filter failed or wasn't adequate.

If your car is under warranty, follow those terms to the letter. My 96 XJS is a bit out of warranty I'm guessing.

Exactly. Jaguar engines are expensive; oil is cheap protection; oil filters are even cheaper protection. Why look for a cheaper oil filter that might not get the job done? There's a reason it's cheaper. To me, the cost saving isn't worth the increased risk.

Cabin air filters are a different matter. What's the worst thing that can happen? The OEM Jaguar filter isn't worth the cost, IMHO. Just be sure to change the aftermarket filter annually.

From Ebay:

My car, my money, my choice.

💯 Stuart and for Fram haters, I know the reference was to oil filters but I think they have cabin filters nailed, perfect fit plus charcoal AND bicarbonate of soda, been using them in everything for years.
