Why did you choose an XK vs. R

I chose the XK simply for its looks, exclusivity and GT-style luxury. My particular use was for nearly all longer distance freeway commuting and, while more power is always nice to have, I personally really did not need more power for such use.
I often wondered if I made the right choice for not purchasing an XKR and I generally concluded that I, indeed, made the right choice. I did sell my XK as I rotated into our present cars an XJL and an XF but, while I love these two cars, I do miss my XK.

I bought a new XK coupe in 2010. Had a choice of buying a used 2009 XKR for about the same price at the Jag dealership, but I really like to purchase only new cars if I can. A 2010 new XKR was significantly more money so that was a big consideration. Also the XK had the new 5.0L engine which the 2009 XKR did not have so the performance difference was not very significant as I drove them both. The XK has plenty of performance for my needs and the two cars look almost alike - you have to be a real "car guy" to tell them apart. Most people on the street can't and half of them think it's an Aston Martin anyway.

The thrill, excitement, exclusivity, exhilaration, sound (performance exhaust) is blizz. I wasn't looking for a cruiser. I wanted something that put a grin on my face and the XKR with dynamic pack and performance exhaust hits the spot. When I reach for a set of keys I need to decide which car I want to take. My first choice is always the XKR coupe even on nice days when the weather is perfect for the convertible G37.

I went in to the dealership thinking XK coupe. I walked out of the dealership with an XKR convertible. One test drive of each sealed it for me. The XKR's combination of mind-blowing acceleration and grin-inducing sound completely won me over. I couldn't afford a new 2013 XKR but they had a sweet 2012 XKR vert in the showroom just in from the Jaguar head office with less than 1,000 miles on it. It was priced less than a new 2013 XK coupe so considering that I plan to own the car a long time, it was an easy decision. My advice is to be patient and diligently seek out one as nearly new as you can afford (XK or XKR depending on your preference) where someone else has eaten the staggering depreciation!

I was open to either but an XKR vs XK was about a 20-25% bump in price when I was looking. Also the only XKR vert nearby and available was a color I hated. I would love the extra kick but my wife drives it a lot and she is 100% satisfied with this dream car. I'm 98% satisfied with it. Also it's always nice to have something to look forward too.

I really didn't care if it was an R or not. But at the time, this car was the only one I found in British Racing Green and not the more metallic Jaguar Racing Green. Do you know that the salesmen at the Huntsville AL dealer didn't even know the difference until I parked next to a new F type? LOL

I'll preface this with saying that anyone driving a Jaguar is a fortunate person and probably worked very hard for it.
The R will always be more special than the XK. The RS more special than the R and so on. Like having an "M" or "AMG" badge. It's just special and that's why I got the R. My daughter loves to try to coax me into flooring it and I tell her that its better to know you can do it and not let everyone around you know what you're capable of than to show off at the wrong time. I'm getting married next year and wanted to get the car before then to be a place holder if you will... before I "have" to budget for curtains and things for the house. Also, I wanted this car to be something that we build memories around going to the mountains, beach, winery's, etc. The R and having something that I know is faster than a DBS is meaningful and special to me.
All that being said... as someone else mentioned, most people - even car people don't know about this car so it impresses very few people having an R vs XK. The XK is a wonderful car and for a GT its still fantastic and considered in the range of an unattainable dream car for most of the population. We're all very fortunate. At the end of the day the only person that REALLY cares is the person holding the keys.
385 or even 300 hp is more than adequate for enjoying this car immensely. 510hp is just special

Collectable high performance cars, performance driving, and later enjoying those capabilities on race tracks has been my passion for many years. But if you're not into that then I could see falling in love with the XK model's styling that appeals most.
Purchase, maintenance, repair and insurance costs are all lower with the XK which is all good. I was surprised that there were so few XK's for sale in Canada when I was looking to purchase an XKR, with all but one being fully optioned XKR's with 20" wheels. I wouldn't be surprised if the normally aspirated XK isn't the rarest model of all!

I'm just going to wait for Lothar to get sick of the dinging sound in his XKR-S and then see if he wants to trade for my 2K9 Portfolio.
