Costco just dropped the price of the Type S Wireless Solar Powered Backup Cam to $99.99 delivered. That's a good deal but you have to hurry, as the sale ends on October 11. I have this system and am pleased with it, although it's nowhere as good as the factory backup cam. The display fits perfectly in my XKR's ashtray. I never shop at Walmart because of my experience as a vendor. They make unfair demands on delivery times, take unearned discounts and chargebacks, and never pay within terms. We dropped them as a customer because it wasn't worth the effort.
You may like them if you're a customer, but understand that they "sell for less" because they brutalize their vendors. They get away with it because they're the 900 pound gorilla, and the only way a little guy can win is to know when to get out of the game.
Even if Walmart was the only game in town, I'd rather go without than buy from them.
Ouch, apologies for touching upon a sore spot. There is no doubt a shared disdain for Walmart but often times "savvy" internet shoppers looking to save a few pennies may not care...
Thanks for the heads up. I take it you are please with the quality? Did you get the power source from the cig lighter? thx
Yes, the display unit is powered by the cigarette lighter. It fits perfectly in the ash tray, in front of the cigarette lighter so you don't see the plug or wires. That socket is switched, so the display shuts off when you shut the engine off and doesn't run down the battery. Here's the display unit in my ashtray, below the touchscreen with my front and rear parking sensors activated:
The camera is molded into the top of the license plate frame and is solar powered, with solar cells in the bottom of the frame. There's also a port in the bottom of the frame for a charger cable to recharge the frame if there wasn't enough sunlight. Here's the license plate frame (the wire is for my battery maintainer):
The frame connects wirelessly to the display by Bluetooth. They're already paired, so everything worked right out of the box. The instructions are good and there are lots of options and features.
It was a good choice for me because I didn't want to spend a lot of money or get in over my head with integrating a backup cam into my touchscreen. It's a quick and easy 10 minute installation that I can unplug a put out of sight in my center console. Tough to beat this for under $100!
UPDATE! A new model with larger display is now on sale at Costco. Type S 6.8" Wide Screen Solar Powered HD Wireless Backup Camera. (I prefer the original, smaller display because it fits perfectly in the ashtray.)
Stuart I was going to send you a PM....
You do realize this lets you have a front and back camera simultaneously.
It supports 2 cameras. Even if you dont have a license frame, you can cut the camera and solar charger and still have a smaller package than anything else on the market.
Yes, and I thought about doing it for about 10 seconds. Front video isn't necessary with the front sensor system with audible and pictograms warnings, and visibility. Reversing is a different matter, since rear visibility is limited in a convertible.
Stuart, how did you get it to stay secure? I just got mine today (saw your post). I have the frame charging at the moment. I did put the display unit on/at the ash tray, but get a lot of movement. I'm assuming you didn't use the suction cup?....

Read my Post #7, above, again. If you bought the new model with the larger 6.8" display, it's too wide to fit in the ashtray.
The original model with the smaller display fits perfectly in the ashtray and hides the plug and wires. If you bought the original version and the display fits in the ashtray but moves around, you need to bundle the power wire with a twist tie and push it forward so you can then angle the top of the display away from you while keeping the bottom edge of the display wedged in the very front edge of the ashtray closest to you.
Although that display is wedged into the ashtray, it just lays there and really isn't secured so it can get dislodged if you corner hard enough or hit a bad pothole. But that hasn't happened to me ... yet.
I got the smaller one when I saw you had mentioned the larger one was too long for the ash tray. I really didn't give it enough time or effort yesterday....too much in a hurry, Will work with it tomorrow....thanks
