Here's a thought: it might just be the instrument cluster module which is faulty, rather than the whole electrical system. After all, you said the car keeps running fine, which it wouldn't if the ECM and TCM were experiencing power fluctuations. What if it's just your interface into the car that's going nuts.

Still looking into the problem, but meantime here is that same video, with a little bit of editing...
Here is the dash view of the problem.... (Very poor Quality, sorry)

Other things did not work.... like no sport mode or paddle shifters, (yet the car shifted as expected in drive mode). Tells me the TCM went into some sort of fault mode as well.
I have two short (340 mile each) road trips in the next week, so it will be a chance to get her up to speed and see how it goes for the two days.
I just hope it isn't something like a cluster failure... Ka-ching...
Yea, I know.... I topped out just under 80 on the straights :^\
Has a lot to do with a base XK and that 240 foot ravine waiting for those that miss the braking zones!
Darn S-4s and RS-4s were breakin 90!

Paddle shifters are connected via the instrument cluster (switch > steering-wheel module > clock spring > instrument cluster), so an ICM fault would disable them. I expect the TCM never received the signals, which was why it was happily shifting away in D.
I think things are pointing more & more to the ICM, sorry - on the flip side, better a single duff module than a widespread problem.

Do you have another dealership within a reasonable distance you might consider? I think this might be your best option. . With electrical gremlins, many times you may be grasping at straws.

Hello fellow jag fourms member
To CleverNane or anyone that’s experienced U0405 code. Any ideas on what it pertains to?
I didn’t experience the symptoms that clever name states car is running incredible minus the fact that CEL turned on with U0405 code. Anything you guys can help with is much appreciated.
Enjoy the day guys!

So I'm 5 hours from home, and suddenly everything in my car "Clicks".
The dash clicks, the seatbelts click, something in the fuse panels behind the rear seat clicks...
Every alarm light on the cluster lights up and both dials drop to zero.
Then message alerts start rapid firing on the center display.
Engine overheat
Battery not charging
Cruse control unavailable
Cats system fault
Oddly, the car is still purring down the road...
Within 5 seconds the dials spring to life.
So I pull over, run a scan on the OBD port and only get two errors.
U0405 and U0155
I write them down and clear them. All the warnings go away except the Cats system Fault.
Curiouser and curiouser....
Watching critical thing like engine temp (Stable as a rock) I drive on.
An hour later... It does the same thing.... Pulled over... Same codes... reset, and now in a hotel researching an answer
Ideas?
I'll search more, but how do I do a full ecu reset? I'd like to see if that clears he cats error, as my ODB reader does no see it in the error tables.
Bad kitty..... (but I still lover her, and gave her a bath before pulling in to the hotel)

Thanks ngarara
Yeah after some research I was able to find that out as well But I’m asking more along the lines if there’s a solution to get the CEL off.
Those dash CEL annoy the heck out of me, n make for a miserable drive.
Thanks again

My BMW does the same thing. All the warning lights suddenly come on, gauges go to zero, car running perfectly. Then it all just as suddenly comes back like nothing ever happened. No check engine light or anything. I am sure it is an electrical issue somewhere, but have no idea where to look. And other than scaring you half to death, there doesn't seem to be any other problems associated with it. Though it is disconcerting to have no working gauges.

Rediscovered this Technical Bulletin today: XK419-002, Falsely Flagged Diagnostic Trouble Codes. It's dated 2006 and says it applies to MY2007 onwards, but I'm not 100% sure it applies to 5.0 models. However, it has this interesting info about the U0405 code:
U0405-83 ECM Invalid data received from Cruise Control Module (CCM) - value of signal protection calculation incorrect.
This DTC occurs when invalid cruise control switch data is received from the Steering Wheel Module (SWM). However, the DTC can be produced by the driver inserting an object (including a key fob) into the Starter Control Unit (SCU). The driver would see 'Cruise not available' displayed within a few seconds of inserting the object. Confirm with the driver when fault occurred. If the fault occurs without using the SCU, confirm operation of the SWM.
U0405-8F ECM Invalid data received from CCM - erratic.
Same as above.
Now, that is probably entirely irrelevant to this conversation, but I thought I'd pass it on anyway. The point is: codes get generated in error by some very odd things.
