The 4.2 XKR, any day.
Just out of interest, have you done anything to be able to hear the supercharger? I can't really hear mine.

The interior in the 2010 will be more modern, but having had the 4.2 and the 5.0 in the XF, I'd say take the 4.2 supercharged. The smaller bore engine sounds awesome especially with minor exhaust mods, and Im a sucker for vents in the bonnet and painted calipers. There are other mechanical/transmission improvements in the 2010 I think, but probably not that you would notice.

Simon,
Depends on your personality. If you're alive, the XKR's your drive! But you'll have to remove fuse 19 to know what I mean. That active exhaust sound is among the best around.
The '09 XKR will feel faster than the '10 XK because the 4.2L supercharged engine produces more torque at lower rpms than the normally aspirated 5.0L engine. Neither engine is a slouch.
You need to compare both cars including, but not limited to, the styling, equipment, colors, maintenance history, and condition to make an informed decision. Both are great cars; the choice is up to you.
Keep us posted and good luck!

I'd say, forget the S/C 4.2 AND the N/A 5.0 and go find yourself a 5.0 XKR. The Rs are pretty much mandatory if you like power, and the upgrades in the 2010s and beyond are worth the price.
Check everywhere, there are many, many available all over the countries.
Wow, I missed the "Christchurch" location. I don't even know what hemisphere that is.

Cee Jay is absolutely right. Find a 5.0L XKR (2010 or newer). Who cares about the interior changes (they're minimal and boring anyway). Press your right foot down on the 5.0L car, and you'll have a hard time going to either of the other choices. Having said that, you can't go wrong with either car. If you go to track day events, you're going to want an R!

New Zealand. Beautiful country, great food, skiing, lots of sheep and missing vowels. Location for shooting "The Last Samurai" and the Tolkein film adaptions. Their cars are notoriously expensive, much like ours in Oz, but it would be a lovely place to drive them.

Assuming you are in Christchurch NZ (like me) and not in Christchurch, UK then are you talking about these cars?
Jaguar XKR 4.2 V8 Supercharged Facelift 2009 | Trade Me
Jaguar XK 5.0 V8 Facelift Coupe 2010 | Trade Me
The 09 looks like it has been upgraded as it has the facelift front bumper and the Portfolio gear knob and surround. So you get a car that looks close to the later cars but with the power of the XKR.
I would probably go XKR myself but I am biased.
Alternatively, have you seen this 5.0L? Lower K's but same price and is a Portfolio. The colouring of the interior is more to my liking as well but that is a personal choice.

When I was shopping for these cars I found the 2010's (5.0 XKR's) carried a >33% premium over the earlier cars. $15,000-$20,000 difference. That's a brand new Hyundai Sonata for 90 more hp. Don't get me wrong, the 5.0 XKR kicks butt. If I had a budget to stay in I'd get an earlier R over a newer n/a all things being equal. The lower mileage R model only one year older makes it a no brainer IMHO.

Having owned an 08 xk and currently owning a 12 xk both NA. I would go for the 2010 or later either NA or supercharged. I don't know what the availability is in Kiwi Land, but if you are the patient type wait for an XKR to popup. Otherwise you can tune and add a Mina (or the like) exhaust system to your NA 10 and up XK and end up with about 440bhp. anyway, good hunting!!

I had the 4.2 XF with a paramount exhaust and it sounded just awesome, like an Aston. The 5.0 doesnt sound anywhere near as good, a bit metallic. The XKR 5.0 sounds great with the x pipe, but I still think the 4.2 sounded better. Also you dont get the sound as good in the coupe, with the back windows being fixed. But everyone else tells me it sounds great from the outside.
