Post Xkr 5.0 crank and cam correlation

Hi all,

Fault code P0018 Crankshaft Position Camshaft position Correlation Bank 2 Sensor A

The car starts but runs rough. Plugged in and comes back with the fault above.

is this a case of replacing the crank sensor on bell housing and right side cam sensor A or is it more serious? ( looking at the engine from front)

Also just for clarity which sensor is A on bank 2 and if replaced should we clear the codes prior to starting or after.

any other advice is welcome.

many thanks in advance.

What's the mileage?

It is possible for the chain to jump a tooth if the tensioners aren't functioning or the teeth/chain is worn.

As mentioned above, it sounds like the classic symptoms of a jumped cam chain on the 5.0 due to tensioner failure. The first thing to before driving the car again is remove the bank 2 camshaft cover and check the chain tension. If it moves more that a few mm the tensioner must be replaced with the new design. Hopefully that is all that will be necessary.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply, I will get the cam cover and check the tensioner as mentioned. Do we need to reset timing or anything else we should be aware of.

many thanks

Hi Mike

If it is the cam chain tensioner which is not applying sufficient tension, then the front cover will need to be removed in order to replace the tensioner and chain. The cam timing will need to be reset as part of this procedure. Unfortunately, if the chain has jumped a tooth or two, there is a possibility that the valves and/or pistons might be damaged so ideally, you need to check this with a boroscope before you reassemble everything. As an alternative, you could perhaps replace the tensioner and chain but, before reassembling everything else and starting the engine, do a compression check. If compression is at least 150 psi and the similar on all cylinders then you should be OK.

Obviously, if the tensioner has failed, then you need to do both banks.

Richard
