XKR-S..Talk me off the ledge...or should I go all-in?

I'm considering purchasing something a bit newer. I've always enjoyed having a vehicle that's not all that common, it adds to the appeal of ownership. Additionally, it's still something that I can work on and maintain.
For those who own one of these beauties...let me know what you think?

Off lease is known for selling vehicles that were driven hard and put away wet or with negative histories. Look at the carfax. Says it was sold at auction and offered for sale in 2016, 17 months later it is still listed for sale with no change in mileage...that’s a long time to be sitting on a lot...

My hot take, considering that I've never even seen an XKR-S in person much less lived with one, nor have I driven an XK8 is this...
Buy an XKR. No, it's not as exclusive and upper end as the R-S and doesn't have the wing, x pipe or front bumper, or seats, but... You'll have far more to choose from and may end up with one with 19" wheels which will ride nicer than the 20's, you won't have to fear every curb and gutter because there's no $3000 piece of carbon fiber down low and up front and because you'll be sitting 20mm higher, you'll enjoy a smoother ride due to slightly softer springs, and will probably come in $10k less than that R-S is going for. Want that extra 40 HP you're giving up by "settling" for an XKR? Throw a tune at it for $600- $900. Want way more than that? Tune and upper pulley for $1200ish. Still want more? Tune, upper and lower pulleys and a heat exchanger for about $3k. Even after that, you're still less than the entry fee for the R-S and are making ~80 HP more (or so the claims go).
BUT... if you want an R-S, go get it and enjoy it, and don't let my personal thoughts sway you.

Reading between the lines on the carfax would make me nervous too. I researched them when I was lookging for my current ride and came away thinking "maybe not". I wound up buying from a new/used dealership that had personal history with my car.
As apealing as their cars appear, I'd recomend looking at listings with better references.
Just sayin'

Without wanting to upset the XKR crowd, I would say drive both cars and decide which you like best. To me, the XKR felt soft and floaty when pushing along on country roads. I would say a Focus RS would be difficult to hang with along a back road in an XKR. If you like to go fast on the interstates or four lane roads the R might be perfect for you. Try it and see, then drive an RS on the same roads.
I daily drive my R-S and have never driven into curbs and broken anything so I am not sure that a lower front spoiler should be a deal breaker. I guess it depends on your driving skill or attention level. Seriously, drive both and decide. I did and was glad I did.

With the XK, I did not do that; my fundamental reasons were a practical daily driver for an hour and a half to two hours on a given day spent in the drivers seat.
I think it really comes down to what a person is trying to achieve, we can provide opinions on what we think; but fundamentally our experience is only part of it as we will not weight different factors in the balance equally.
A "bread and water" car where you shop based on nutritional value is easy to figure out from others what to do or not to do; and a master piece of the culinary arts are going to vary with one expression being more to ones liking than another.

I'd prefer the white one, it's much cleaner IMO.
I appreciate your thoughts and insight.

To the OP, keep looking. These cars talk to you and you'll find the one you really need eventually. If you're asking the forum to make up your mind, the cars aren't talking to you.
Per the original question, going from a 2001 XK8 to anything X150 is going to be a huge 'difference'. I'd suggest sampling all three groups and see which you like the most and which actually talk to you. Many, many threads about differences and what folks do and do not like about different generations of the X150.

I was interested in that same exact car last month. Scary carfax and lack of service records turned me off.
I’ve driven another Off lease only car (XKR) and it too had odd carfax with almost no service records. It was for sale for nearly a year.
I ended up purchasing a mint 2012 XKR coupe with 29k miles through a high end dealer in Miami. All service records from Jaguar of Fort Lauderdale. Select warranty until October of 2018 too. As goofy as it sounds.. the AC seats in the XKR are a huge plus with our hot summers. The RS won’t have the cooled seat option because of the sport seats.
I have never ever driven a XKR-S. I was obsessed with it.. I ended up going the R route because I found the right car with the right history. I say go for the R-S. It’s rediculousy exotic looking. I would avoid the off lease only car though.
Good luck!

The R-S came with the Performance Active Exhaust (x-pipe), as did the 75, the Dynamic R and the Final Fifty. For other XKRs, it was an option from 2011 on.
It's a daft name - all XKRs have an active exhaust. The key word is 'performance'.
