XKR to XKR-S...
#41
OMG...I could hardly see the F Type for that front door!!!
You know, I like the F Type until I see the front end. The XKR-S had the same effect on me but has grown on me over time. And, in Black the XKR-S front end doesn't seem to be as "fugley" (to borrow SoCalBabe's word) as with other colors. Anyway...
I have test driven an F Type vert, a V8S. I have not driven an F Type R...not to mention the R-S if/when that comes out. I wasn't squeezed by the F Type, but it definitely felt much smaller to me. If they had put the front end of the "7 Project" car on the F Type I would probably be driving one right now.
Well, admitting it, the XK/R looks like the DB9 in many ways. The DB9 and it's variants are ravishing (just like SoCalBabe I am sure ), and I have always loved them. After sitting in and driving a 2007 DB9 a couple years ago, I actually like the XK better...especially the interior. The XK has a more functional instrument cluster. An until Aston put in the diamond stitching in their interior I think the XKs interior looks just as good, even better in some respects than the DB9. And the 5L XK performs better than even the latest DB9's.
So, the 2012 XKR-S I was considering is being transferred from the Miami Carmax (where it was) to my local Carmax. It will arrive in about 10 days from what they said. I will then trade my 2010 XKR for it. I got the XKR-S for $84,998, which is not too bad. It has 3640 miles. I've checked with my local Jag dealer and according to what they see it needs two software service updates to body control modules, but has had it's first service, and I get three more (yearly) free. They will do the second service when I get it up here. It does not have the Carbon Fiber engine cover but that is not a big deal to me. It has cruise not not adaptive which is actually fine with me - I never liked adaptive cruise.
I've posted some pics below...
I am looking forward to getting the car.

Great decision and sounds like a good price. I do like the XKR-S in black. Let me know when you want to buy my extra CF engine cover.
It adds at least 70 BHP and significantly improves handling...

I just used what came with the spacers.
There were indentations in the wheels where the tips of the stock bolts coming through the spacers fit into. The wheels just went right over them with no problem.
The wheels on this XKR-S appear to be the Vulcan wheels. I don't know if they have the same indentations on the back side of the center hub.

Holy moly! They just called me and said the car would arrive this coming Monday...they are putting it on the truck today.
That's pretty quick...but Miami to Atlanta is (EDIT) *NOT* a huge distance...
I did not proof read that sentence when I first typed it...geeze...

Wow...really?! Well, the guy that has been helping me so far at Carmax has been very attentive. I sure hope they are careful with the car.

I did not buy the car.
Just want to publicly thank Lothar for his invaluable advice and help. He warned me (and us) about Carmax, and like a modern day prophet his predictions were all realized. They damaged the car in shipment, and Carmax is just ridiculous.
The front carbon fiber splitter had to be replaced...cost from Jag, $2925. After a half an hour of ridiculous discussions, I agreed to get it repaired. I know a guy near me that has a really good body shop and could repair it and repaint it the same color as the car. I would eventually replace it myself.
I found other damage like dings, and the drivers seat was in absolute horrible shape! The car only had ~3670 miles on it and the outside drivers side bolster was worn down beyond the surface! The seat itself looked like a 600LB person had been wallowing in it for years. There were other issues as well.
Even after reconciling to fix all this stuff later, the salesman kept coming back with restriction after restriction after restriction when trying to do the deal. After 4.5 hours I finally said no. At the end, the salesperson actually said to me that he was tired of all this back and forth stuff!!! I almost laughed out loud.
Ladies and gentlemen, run - do not walk - away from Carmax. They are the *MOST* ridiculous place to buy a car.
That was a nightmare I will never repeat.

Give yourself a lot of credit for inspecting and re-inspecting the car. Give yourself a lot of credit for taking the advice of the other member here to provide insight in dealing with the Carmax people. And most of all, give yourself a lot of credit for making the decision to "pass" this one up.
I am sure with careful research and time, your wish of owning an XKR-S will come, and the patience you excerise will be well worth it.
Buying a car is a real experience, especially dealing with any dealership. And in your case Carmax.
Thanks for letting us know, as I don't think Carmax will be getting any future business from those who have followed this thread.

My thoughts exactly. I wish I had taken a photo of it now. The seat looked *years* old with wear. Very weird.

Oh man so sorry to hear this! I wonder if it was a salvage or wrecked car that somehow did not show up on carfax. I had this happen to me with a Corvette 20 years ago. I bought what I thought was a clean 86 vert and when i got it the top was in horrible shape, the frame was bent and all the wheel bearing were shot. It had "32000" miles on it, yeah right...

Wonder if it was used as a "corporate car" meaning, either a journalist car that SoCalBabe admittedly "trashed" or one of those JaguarAlive or Academy cars that a million people entered/exited while doing tire burnouts all day long. Did the Carfax say it was privately registered or corporate registered? I only consider used cars that were privately registered from new. Jaguar had a whole bunch of "corporate" cars assigned to track duty and now all those low mileage cars are on the market.

Sorry to hear about the car falling through, however, kudos to you for having the backbone and the ability to walk away. I know that feeling of saying to yourself that there are little things (or big ones) that you can fix once you own the car, but the fact is by doing that you're rewarding the bad behavior of the dealer in not disclosing defects. It's hard to walk away once you've set your heart and mind to acquiring the car. Congratulations on your willpower!

rschultho - sounds like the one you saw was a lot worse than this? Sorry to hear about all of your challenges - it's an emotional roller-coaster buying one of these fantastic cars, but worth it in the end when you get the right one!
