You could try these folks, but they charge £45. Somebody has to pay their wages, Jaguar don't.

Prefix 'S' indicates Special Equipment model a.k.a. XK120 M
Number 677658 is in the range manufactured in 1954
Body : P 1658
Prefix 'P' indicates DHC
Number 1658 is sequential
Engine : A 9409 -8
Prefix 'A' should be an 'F' if original engine
Number 9409 is sequential
Suffix '-8' indicates compression ratio
Here is the table from JDHT records confirming the above:

data plate numbers
IF..the data plate is original to the car..yes, blanks are available to be filled in..by anyone..with anything...
yes, S preceeding the chassis is Special Equipmnet..wire wheels being the easiest thing to spot..but those could also be added after mft. If an S, then the S would also be after the final 8 in the engine number..8S...the 8 being the conmpression ratio of the head. The number on the block..just above the oild filter..is the engine number and the SAME number would be on the original head. Many cars had the head replaced..thus head number does not match engine number..interesting as to what head and what was done to it at the time of replacement, but not a big deal. AN "A" preceeding engiine or head number is a Mark 7..(i have to check this..and will so look back here)
