Hello everyone.
I'm looking for some help. A close friend of mine's dad recently passed and I'm helping the family to catalog and possibly sell his collection of cars and parts.
One of the cars in the collection is an XK140 DHC. It appears to be an MC due to the wire wheels, C head engine, switch on the dash for overdrive, and holes in the bumpers where a foglights should be. Old pictures of the car showed that it did have foglights at one time.
Upon examining it, I couldn't find the number plate to verify if the parts are original to the car or if it was a copy. Is there a guide or anything available to find all of the numbers for the car and where they should be. Unfortunately, the car is in rather rough condition. It needs a total restoration. Well over my expertise and wallet could handle otherwise I would buy it myself and restore it as I love the look and feel of old classic jags.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi BMW
You don't say where you are located, it can help. Here is a Jaguar Service Bulletin extract on the subject, hope it helps: -
Is there no registration document, or maybe an insurance certificate around somewhere ? Jaguar Heritage in the UK can assist if you can provide at least some information, as they have the original factory records.
Regards
Fraser

SB 163 - Feb 55: Identification of XK140 models: Chassis numbers etc explained (per
commission plate). All set out in detail what chassis numbers meant etc. Notes that chassis number was stamped on chassis frame left hand side member "above rear engine mounting bracket" - therefore not on the front cross member as it had been on the XK120. Engine no. on back of head and above oil filter. C type cylinder head
painted red between the valve covers and has a "Jaguar Type C" badge on each cover. Gearbox no. was stamped on a shoulder at left hand rear corner of gearbox, AND on the rim of the core plug aperture in the top cover. JL or OSL prefixes (no difference noted) and E suffix indicated overdrive. Body no. is on a plate attached to the left hand side of the scuttle under the bonnet.

Fraser,
Thank you for the information. The car and myself are in the Austin, TX area. The car has not been on the road for as long as my friend can remember. He thinks it was last registered in 1979. They are sorting through all of the paperwork he had in hopes of finding something about it.
It was a car his father bought in college in 1962 for $500 in Alabama. He was a student at University of Alabama and it was in the back of a garage the area with a blown water pump. The mechanics there new nothing about jaguars and had no idea where to get the parts and how to fix it. He was a classic british sports car guy having owned an XK120 and 2 E types along with a MGA and a couple of MGBs. This XK140 FHC and a 1971 E-Type 2+2 V12 are still there. unfortunately for both they were left outside for many years.
I will have to go out tomorrow and look in those locations and see what I can come up with and then talk to the Jaguar heritage to get the rest of the information.

The cars you mention can be worth tidy sums in the right condition, and if restorable usually fetch quite decent money. The XK140 was always a funny car, an XK120 with bigger bumpers it seems to me ! Actually, I think it has a steering rack, rather than a box, but I may be wrong.
All the parts you need for these cars are available in England, where there is a thriving rebuild market. You can even get complete monocoques for the E-type and the bonnet (hood).
