XK140 Fuel Leak

Default XK140 Fuel Leak

Hello all, 1st post.
We have an XK140 we have been helping a client with for quite some time and have came across something we've not experienced before.
He had a fuel leak at the sending unit. We were able to repair that easy enough and no leaks when we put fuel in it.

What's happening is it leaks when he's filling it.
Looks like it's coming out of a small nipple on the side of the tank above the level senor and below the filler neck
My thought was that due to the volume on the new pumps that it was pushing out that nipple/vent?
When we added fuel from our can it's not leaking, only leaked at the higher volume.

Is my thinking off or is there something wrong here?

That is a vent for filling. It should have a hose running back to the filler neck. Perhaps left off during restoration. It will take a hose with a 90 deg. bend to clear the tire.

Thanks for that. I was thinking the same but was not able to locate where it would have gone to.
There is nothing on the filler neck. Nothing in the trunk for it to pass through either?

Lets see a pic of the inside of the filler box and the upper inner fender. Bet there is a small hole somewhere there unless an XK150 tank has been substituted.

Sure enough. There is the other end.
The Top side was covered by the trunk liner out of site!

I could be incorrect but.. From what I've found the 140 Chassis was not equipped with this Vent. The 150 chassis was.
That said. That hose hanging from the inner fender, doesn't seem like hooking that up to the tank is ideal. That part is open to the elements so water etc would end up going through the hose into the tank.

Thinking the best option here is to cap it off as this fuel system was not designed for it. The other option I'm considering is a short length of hose with a filter in the end of it and have it tucked up in front of the tank. Still Vent if needed but foreign items (dirt/water) would be less likely to invade the tank.
