RE: Any way to program a remote yourself?
Dont know about your XKR but here are the instructions sent to me for my '99 XK-8 sent to me by an honestlocksmith that could have taken my money. Worked great. Hope it does for ou. Let s know please.
firstjag.
Here are the instructions for programing your car:
1: Pull and hold headlight flasher toward you.
2: Insert key in the ignition and turn to position 1...allows headlight to operate
3: Release and flash the headlight 4 additional times. (In some cases, only three times will be necessary.) Alarm will enter programing mode indicated by a chime and or a flash from the led light by the shifter
4: Program the transmitter by pressing the unlock or lock button. The horn should beep and or the led light up. You need to press the remote so that the horn/ light goes off 5 times. Then turn the key off and try the remote.
Note: (If you had other remotes to program, you would need to press the other remote buttons at least once, but maintain the 5 total beeps)

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I just purchased a beautiful '01 XJ8 VDP which did not come with a remote. I bought one off Ebay and have followed all the programing methods suggested in this forum but still it won't work. On the 4Xheadlight flashing method, the alarm chimes on the 4th headlight flash and then chimes twice after about 5 seconds. The alarm system works fine with the key as do all the other electronic devices involved with the fob. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Test Point, I took your suggestion and visited my Jag dealer and found out a few things.......none of the numbers on the back of the transponders are Jaguar part numbers so he couldn't tell me anything about the one they sent me. He did, however, give me the Jaguar part # for the correct one for my VIN #. I emailed this information to the company I bought mine from and they agreed to try and find me the correct one. Seems there are several for year '01 xj8. Thanks for your input and will keep the Forum updated.

Problem not resolved yet......the company agreed to refund my money so I returned it to them. In the meantime, I have written the previous owner of the car asking him to send the remote to me if he still has it. Before I purchase another after-maarket one, I,ll wait for his reply. Locking/unlocking the car with the key is not so bad anyway. When I have more news, I'll let you guys know. Thanks for listening.

Discount Remotes got me the correct transmiitter for my VIN #, I programmed it according to the instructions in this Forum and it works fine. I got the part # from the parts man at the local Jag dealer, and that # appears on the transmitter.
I couldn't have programmed it without the proceedure instructions from you guys and I greatly apprecite your help.

Do you have more than one remote? If so, try the other remote. I've disconnected my battery numerous times and I've never had to reprogram a remote.
If you just have one remote, try changing the battery in the remote. It might just be a weird coincidence that the car batt and the remote batt died at the same time. I'm not quite sure if changing the battery requires the remote to be reprogrammed. Just follow the procedure above if the remote doesn't work after you've changed the battery. My car came with no remotes. I bought two on eBay for $25 or so, and the procedure above worked perfectly for me. In fact, I think that's how I found this forum.
