Default Hear where the money goes...

So totday I took off the rear mufflers just to find out what it's like. After cruising for an hour I must say this is just what I want. (The wifey will not agree btw).

So why not keep it this way, I wonder, It's not even a very ugly sight, just unusual. Does anyone drive like this?

Would deceiving the police be the only reason to just put on some straight rear pipes? Wil that change the sound profile a lot?

Thanks,

Kees

I had the rear mufflers removed and a straight pipe put in, just to release a bit of noise - but not too much.

Im sure in the UK having a bit of exhaust "missing" would be an MOT fail.

Hot exhaust gases venting from there should give some interesting temperatures in the fuel tank.

and you'd have to hope the underbody was pretty gas tight too.

Default Hear the money go

Here's my XK8 with the rear muffler (center muffler deleted as well) deleted with 4" stainless steel tips. Fills the space well. Your wife will not be thrilled with the sound!

Well put. If you drive fast enough you can't hear it as much (exhaust or wife yelling)!

LOL!

Thanks all; I will get me some pipes and make sure I keep the original mufflers just for the Dutch equivalent for MOT (EU regulated....?) and maybe to spoil the wife one day with a quiet ride (no pun intended)

Just out of curiousity I will measure the outlet temp and share, unless someone already knows

Had an 1980 Ford bronco which I changed the exhaust to come straight out the back, purchased a new 120 quart cooler and put it on the trailer hitch mount on the back. Kept smelling something like plastic burning, 145 miles later I arrived at the hunt camp. You know the rest of the story. You are going to be surprised at the temp. coming out of the exhaust when you get up speed. Love to see your results. Jim

Default temps

As promised I did som temp measurements under the Jaaag.

Stationary: exhaust gasses at the connection point of where rear muffler used to be : 40 degrees celcius. At 2000 RPM: 80 degrees.

At the fuel tank surface (some 20 cm away from the exit) I can easily keep my hand there at 2000 RPM.

So, Im still having the pipes, but mostly to cheat the rozzers.

BTW, Dutch MOT equivalent does not test for noise! Legally the exhaust just needs to be gas tight and properly fitted.

And I still love the sound.

Take care

I do not know about the UK, but it is illegal to vent exhaust under a automobile here in the US.

BTW: what is 'TOTDAY', is that a UK holiday I have not heard about??

Default from Status Quo to Stones...

So here's my final update on this little endeavour; Used 30 cm of stainless flex (next time use 40 cm), 75 cm straight pipe.

The impact on the sound is considerable: Not only more sophisticated (Seems Porsche imitated this sounds with the Panamera), but also volume goes from 70% to 50%.

Still enjoyable, specially when accelleration; The growl is much more distinctive than with standard mufflers, but not as loud as in the previous setup.

Some other advantages: The drone (resonation) between 1200 - 1400 RPM in 5th fully gone, and perhaps a bit more torque (only noticable in 5th).

And last but not least, the wife says it's much better now....
