Thumbs up Quad Tips Installed

From the earlier thread:

The quad tips came today, and yes, after some discussion at the muffler shop it was unanimous that something should be used, so we decided on a glass pack reversed for its relative quiet operation and short length in the small area.

You were right Tony, there was a barely enough room, but it was there!

I don't have any photoshop ware, so you all know my plate # now haha.

Snug fit...

Here's the underneath. Had an excellent pipe fitter!

Thanks to everyone for all the ideas and input. It was well worth the result!

So you have the center muffler, the intermediate muffler, and now glasspacks to replace the rear boxes? So basically all stock up to the new glasspacks? How does it sound?

Yes, that's the config. The glasspacks were reversed for quiet mode, so I'm not hearing very much really, just a low note when I put the pedal down a little firm. At highway speed, there's a constant low tone from the rear, which is easy to drown out with the radio. I have no experience w/glasspacks, so I went the conservative route. The only thing I remembered about them was they were very loud.

The other alternative was a Datsun 240Z type muffler which would have been small enough for the space, and had the in/out ports in a straight line. He didn't have any in stock, and there were more expensive. I don't remember what the sound level was supposed to be.

I'm still considering going with an H pipe to get a little more sound, that's after some other things tho.

Jaguar quad tips are perfect, IMHO. Just the right distance apart, diameter, taper, shape, etc.

I just found my next mod! Thes look GREAT Mark and are exactly what I'm looking for. I want quad tips but I don't want to increase the exhaust noise. Where did you buy the quad tips, from Jaguar or through your muffler shop? I think I may give the 240Z muffler a try to see what the sound is like.

The tips were salvage, got them from Massey in Tenn. I think that was they're only XKR at the moment, but you can certianly give them a call. Ed might be able to find another set. Massey Auto Parts

This is the solution I've been looking for; I love the look of the quad tips but do not want a droning exhaust from some resonance when at highway speeds. I looked at the 240Z muffler and it's basically a straight pipe and should work. I may need to play around with the hangers but a good muffler shop should be able to make it work. Now I just need to find a couple of dual tips from a 2005 or 2006 XKR. Anyone have any leads?

Are you sure you wanted them welded to the brace at the end instead of hung with something to allow vibration and shock?

They didn't ask me. Perhaps with the narrow opening in the bumper they didn't want any excess motion. Not getting any buzz or vibes from the rear since installation.

I'd keep an eye on that weld. Over time it's a lot of stress and vibration.

Otherwise, good look, for sure.

Mark, do you have a photo of the quad tips before you installed them? I found a place that will custom make a set for me but they need to see what they look like. Thanks,

Mark

No I don't. The pic from underneath the car in the first post should give them an idea tho. Pretty basic design, shouldn't be hard to dupe. Would suggest reducing the size a bit .
