Default Tilt mirror on reverse

2000 XK8

Am I crazy or did these cars come with tilt-on-reverse passenger mirrors?

I put the car in reverse last week and I could have sworn the mirror tilted down. Now that I'm watching it wont do it.

Was I hallucinating?

Mine does not tilt on reverse but if I manually tilt it when I take the car out of reverse it automatically returns to the preset position.

Mine tilts. You have to toggle the mirror adjustment knob down once while in reverse. Once you shift out out reverse, it returns to its normal position.

Perhaps you were () ........ but the Powerfold Mirrors DO have a passenger dip function.

Note the selector switch (B - see section boxed in red) MUST be in the left or right position for the dip function to operate.

Ah now I understand. I must have gone to tilt it down a bit and been surprised when it took over and was dropping 7 degrees each time i touched it.

Ok. This is doin mi ed in.

I have power fold mirrors. One slight pull backwards on the mirror position switch and the mirrors fold in no problem.

I have tried all the permutations my little mind can think of to get the side mirror, either side, to dip when I put it in reverse.

I select reverse. Put the mirror selection switch in the middle. Tried a slight tap backwards, the power mirrors fold in. Tried a tap to the left and a tap to the right. Nothing. Tried all sorts of other things without success.

What is the exact sequence you have to do to get the mirror to automatically dip down then automatically back up again when reverse is de-selected?

Anyone?

I posted the exact sequence in #4. See the red box in the graphic.

Yes, its not me. There is something wrong with the mirror memory. I followed those steps to the letter. Tried both sides. Nothing. I can adjust but it will not go back to its normal position.

I did try redoing the memory. i.e pushing the M button till 'bonged' then pressing 1. Moving the mirror. Just pressed 1. The mirror did not move.

Put the car in reverse. Moved the mirror down. Deselected reverse. Mirror stayed where it was. Pushed the 1 button on the memory. Mirror did not move.

If you move the seat at all and push the memory the seat will return to the memorised position.

Suggestions? Disconnect battery etc, reset?

Slow down Frank.

The procedure in post 4 is correct. It only affects the passenger side not the drivers side.

It doesn't happen automatically when you select reverse either.

For the mirror to dip, the selector switch has to be set to the passenger side, put the car in reverse and then pull back on the toggle and let go.

If it does not work then it may well be a dealer level switchable parameter and not switched on.

Yes I know, but I checked both sides, just in case.

It doesn't happen automatically when you select reverse either. That is not what others are saying. But I did dip it manually anyway.

For the mirror to dip, the selector switch has to be set to the passenger side, put the car in reverse and then pull back on the toggle and let go. Yes I know, I can make it dip to the road. But when you de-select reverse it is supposed to automatically return. It is also supposed to move when you hit the memory button after you have adjusted it for whatever reason.

If it does not work then it may well be a dealer level switchable parameter and not switched on.
There is a reversing mirror selection section in SDD and it is selected as on. I checked that. I also switched it off and back on.

I am beginning to suspect a dry joint or similar in the circuit board in the mirror.

Thanks for the reply. I know your only trying to be helpful.

Sometimes a faulty position sensor will cause the mirror to stop normal functions.
Some cars can be 'enabled/disabled' for 'dip-in-reverse' with WDS, IDS, SDD etc. listed under 'DEALER CONFIGURATION' in vehicle config tab.

Look for Body codes in the door module for mirror faults to see if the position sensors are OK. You might even be able to 'watch' the mirrors in DATALOGGER but I don't remember.

To quote from my last posting :-

"There is a reversing mirror selection section in SDD and it is selected as on. I checked that. I also switched it off and back on."

Its not showing any faults. But if you go through the symptoms it comes up with "adjustment out of range" what ever that means. Does not tell you how to fix it though.

One could automate the reverse tilt whenever the car is put in reverse by using a PAC TR7 trigger. Wire the appropriate input of the tr7 to the reverse (backup) lights, and setup one of the outputs as a single pulse output, connected to the mirror lower switch output. The only thing that may be needed (or recommended) is a diode to prevent damage to the output of the tr7 (I just haven't check the output impedance yet, but a diode can't hurt). Just a thought if someone is caught up on maintenance and needs a project.

I thought this was a neat feature until we got our 2012 Acura TL for my wife. In that car the mirror tilting is totally automatic when you put the car in reverse. In the Jaguar it's not really automatic--you have to futz around with the mirror position toggle and each time you hit the toggle when in reverse it will tilt a bit more.

One other thing I did notice is that the drivers mirror will not dip if I try to move it whilst the car is in reverse.

I think the memory system is screwed up somewhere. I really need to do a reset but cannot be hassled to remove the battery lead then recode the radio etc.

I will sort it eventually.

The Driver's Mirror does NOT have the dip function. It's only the Passenger side mirror that dips as a parking aid.

I thought you can determine which mirror dipped by the position of the little selector switch.

Sorry it must have been the way I put it. What I meant to say was when you select reverse you can no longer adjust the drivers door mirror. I appreciate that it is only the passenger door that has the dip function.
