VVT Problem (code P-1396)
#22
dont put it off thinking it is time consuming. If the actuator is not the problem then it is the position of the lobe on the end of the camshaft that needs to be adjusted..this is actually quite simple. only the valve cover needs to be removed, none of the front of the engine needs to be touched. there is not a lot of room to work but if you arent a big guy you should be able to do it without removing the hood. thanks again for the info Pawel, if you need help when you do yours feel free to drop me a line (turns out it wasnt an issue relating to the replacement of the chains and tesioners but rather a common issue on the early serial #s of the xk8 4.0 l engine)

Yesterday I started to repair it, but my camshaft looks ok there is no noticeable difference in what you can see in the attached picture Vvt problem (maybe you will see something you different), and therefore I have to go to clause 12 as instructed. Unfortunately at the moment I have no other parts of newsletter ..

Its hard to tell from the picture, but it will only be out by a hair. if you dont see it on the one side try rotating the camshaft 180 degrees and there is another notch on the other side. I didnt see it on top side either and had to rotate to the other side to see it. You are doing the drivers side right?

Hi folks I have great news. After month's of thinking about the problem I found solution! The solution was very simple. In the cover of VVT "B" and VVT "A" there are two O-rings one made of rubber and second made of material similar to plastic. I changed them in both sides and my problem has gone forever . I'll hope that also you will solve the problem or.. come to Poland we can do It together

Yeah got the same issue P1396 so I decided to get a new VVT solenoid but I'm having trouble and removing the camshaft cover I loosened all bolts I took off spark plugs nothing seems to be holding it down but seems to be stuck not sure if the old solenoid is causing it to beheld down any suggestions on how to remove camshaft cover?

Make sure to drop your oil pan and inspect before putting any expensive parts or a lot of time into it.
Make sure the oil suction screen is free of sludge, and while you're under there, make sure to take a small flashlight and a slim tool to poke around every hole in the pan area.

As for your camshaft cover, take a good look to see if anyone used any gasket sealer (which is a no-no). They should come off very easily, and I doubt if the solenoids are keeping them from coming off.
Maybe a tap from a plastic hammer may free it up.

Thanks for advice - I will do - I'll let u know how it comes out - I thought the oil might had been a issue so I recently used a oil flush on my last oil change I thought that might had helped but code still appeared

Update
Hey I just changed out the VVT solenoid code still there p1396
I also changed out gaskets camshaft cover is there any advice for what steps should I take to try to fix the solution I have to get my car inspected - strangely it looks like the car has no effect car driving perfect there is no check engine light on dashboard but when I use the reader it shows up any advice would be great
Once again I had a issue. P1396 had it for over a month I just changed out the solenoid + gaskets no luck code still there after very expensive repair - it may be wires if so how do I inspect wires or fix - my car is already rejected I need to fix this ASAP -
