I would check the gear change control cable
DEllinger,
Firstly welcome to the Forum and congrats on your 2004 XKR. Lovely choice of car. Ýou haven't mentioned if you're handy with a wrench so I'll make some simple DIY suggestions first. Pardon me, if it's a bit basic for you.
+1 to mhminnich. I would first check the gear change control cable, which is adjustable. I haven't had this problem so have no direct experience but I am familiar with this area of the X100.
Getting access is easy. There's a series of great DIY YouTube videos by Rev. Sam. One of these will get you access. Link below.
Then I attach a screenshot below from Terry's Jag website for what you need to be looking for. Let us know what you find. As your fix could help others.
If that doesn't fix the issue, then report back as then we're looking at other issues such as the actual J Gate module, neutral microswitch etc.
If it's more serious, ie an issue with the gearbox, then you'll need to plug in the OBD2 and read whatever codes the car is reporting.

I would also investigate the cable attachment (arrowed in red) and adjustment (arrowed in black) as the first step in troubleshooting. I'd then check the gear control cable (shown on the LH side in Davids' diagram in post #3) isn't loose.
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.
