My ‘98 XK8 only came with one set of key and fob (who does that?! Who just loses car keys??!!).
I’ve been forum surfing and realize that the earlier model year cars have a fob that’s hard to find, aside from buying a used one that’s $$$
But I’ve also seen mention of alternatives, although all the eBay links posted seem to be dead now… has anyone managed to find a reliable 3rd party solution?!
My used eBay unit took some time to get it programmed, but eventually it worked. That was 3+ years ago and still working fine today. I don’t recall what I paid for it.
I purchased a used one from e bay in February for $60. There were several listed then. I picked the one that looked the least used. The seller was auto works motors.
The keyfob transmitters from 1998 to 2000MY X308 sedans are the same so that will give you some more options in your search.
The 2001MY onward X100 and X308 transmitters are different and can be identified by the button shape.
The battery part numbers are in the pic.
You mentioned the difference in the MY fobs, but you didn't tell us about the 1996 MY. My 1997 XK8 (315MHz) fob looks like the one on the left, but as we have found out several times, there are differences in a lot of things after the first MY. My 1997 XK8 fob reads "LJA2610AA" on the back. The fob used to work well, and then became sporadic.I have changed the battery several times. Now, it just acts dead. Also, when I use the key to manually open or lock the doors it "kicks back" and fights my attempts. I think it opens alright, then fights locking, but it may be the other way. Of course, the local Jagshop wants to tear into the door.
Any suggestions?
Ken

Anyone else having trouble finding new key fob batteries these days? I had to go to three different stores today before I finally found the CR 1632 battery required by my wife's 2015 Lexus RX350 key fob. Pandemic order fulfillment issues strike yet again....

Amazon. no stress, no wasted effort. Would I rather shop local ? Certainly. But for some items I give in to inevitably.
The keyfob transmitters are different TO VIN 042775 and FROM VIN A00001.
MY makes no difference when you are using the parts catalogue with the VIN as a reference.
014046. Does that tell us anything? I hear there are lock solenoids in the door that might go bad, but shouldn't my system react with some kind of noises when I push the buttons? I don't think the trunk or lights work by the remote, either. Do I need to try a "better" battery? Or, am I doomed to buying and having programmed a new remote? I'm gonna bet that's expensive.
The keyfob transmitter TO VIN 042775 requires TWO CR2016 3v batteries. (6 VOLTS)
If you installed a single CR2032, it will probably NOT WORK. (3 VOLTS)

What you said is absolutely true. However, having tried it out of necessity (it’s all I had on hand at the time), I can confirm it does work (at least for me). Have had this one in for about a year, and it works from about 20ft away and from inside the house (I haven’t tried to find the limit). So it’s worth a try if you’re stuck (but 2 x cr2016 are undoubtedly better.)
It the fob is starting to work less efficient, take it apart and clear with alcohol (70%) and an ear butt. The green motherboard can be flipped out of the rubber surround. than all contacts are to be cleaned. Also, when replacing the batteries, you have to reprogram the fob again. That is easy enough and with a little practice, any non technical person can do it. Put the key in the contact. Hold the warning light stalk towards you and turn the key to ACC. First fob is prgrammed by flashing the light stalk 3 times and than push one button on the fob. Second fob is the same sequence but that the stalk is to be flashed 2 times so a total of 5 (3 and 2 flashes with the stalk) is done. That is about it. Cleaning, replacing batteries and reprogram the fob is no rocket sciense. On this forum it is discriebed many times.

Ummmmm...my mind cannot even picture what you are describing. Too damn old, I guess. Probably too old to enjoy this Jag anymore.
But, "reprogramming" because the batteries were changed? I've never heard of this. Do all fobs need this....because I have one for my 2004 Yukon Denali that was replaced/reprogrammed,. then just quit working. Of course, I tried changing the batteries. So.....????
OH....I am using 2 new RAYOVAC 3v lithium 2016s. These used to cost about $10, so how can they be sold for $1 for the pair these days? Even the Chinese don't work that cheap.
