1997 ECM Removal/Location?
#2
It is up on the front pass side of motor compartment.
In this pic it is top right, that pc with the whole in it. Pull that plastic cover out with the hole in it.
There you will see two devices, a small one and a big one, the small unit (up near the hole location on the cover) is the trans computer/control module. Behind it, or the BIGGER unit is your ECM, main computer. It has like a set of 3 or 4 bunches of wire connection groups. There are a couple things holding the unit in. You do not have to remove the trans unit to get the ECM out. Remove the two pc's holding the ECM in, then remove the wire connections on the ECM then lift up and out. Sorry I am a little foggy on what everything is, it is pouring outside so I am not walking to garage to look, ha ha ha.

Don't be scared to tug on the wires to the ECM, just be firm but not yanking it like at leash on a out of control dog. And there are ONLY two units in there, you won't mistake one for the other. Part of the ECM sits under the cowl, so it is a little hidden.

You may find you have a fight on your hands as the ECU is encased in a sealed compartment which is screwed together with anti tamper (as in DIY) screws which are easy to tighten but becouse they are chamfered are a bit of a b****r to undo. make sure you have a wide blade with a square end and use plenty of downforce otherwise it will slip out and make it that bit harder to undo, Oh and when you get the top off you will find the ECU supported on a bracket with Yes more of the same.
Just persevere and you will get them out.(I know I was that man)

It's under the black encasement that you have the 3 pc's of plastic sitting on. There are 4 screws holding that encasement lid covering it. That does look diff then mine. Odd, but the black encasement is the same as mine. Be careful withthe screws when takenign them out that you don't lose one down into the motor area on that side.

Odd that I do not see the trans modual. Maybe it is diff on yours?? But that case, take out the 4 screws, two upfront, two on the sides sort recessed on the sides, once they are out, that top lefts up and over the fuses (it should) then youwill see the ECM, again with I THINK 3 banks of wires going into it. Unplug them (little tight quarters if you have fat fingers) then the unit lifts up and comes out. There may be a brace holding the unit in the case, I do not remember.

again dont be afraid, taker your time, be easy, you won't break anything. If you want to feel more at ease, cover the fuses back up, I think the cover of the ECM can come out with that stuff covered as will the ECM also. But again, the black case that you have the 4 smaller plastic pcs on, the top of that has to come off, then you will see the ECM.

I have a 1997 Jaguar X/J 6 and the ECM is located on the passangers footboard on the left side. Remove the postive cable from your battery. After removing the cover you will see a box. Thats the ECM. Make sure the whitr pin guides stay in the car plug. there are 2 wire harnesses you have to push hard to release thenm and there you go 1 ECM match the #'s to any you may come across. I'm sending mine out to be rebuilt. I was having a lot of misfires. after changing the plugs and coils I'm having the same problem. I bought a used one for $40.00 and it lasted about 2 months.
Cheers,
