I just wanted to mention the tranny because if you're on a budget, having it fail after putting in a new motor would really, really suck and you might be better off having it rebuilt or replaced, if necessary, before putting everything back together. Since these trannies do seem to have issues sometimes, I thought I'd mention it. Just a thought. I'll shut up now. lol

Since the engine will be out, pull the tranny as well and check the A-drum for cracks. Only a few extra steps and it will save you another R&R if it is cracked.

. . . and replace the transmission valve body due to failed tolerances causing the 'A' drum failure.

Actually they updated the internal parts of the zf in 1999-2001, when I had my 97 rebuilt they put in the reinforced heavy duty A-drum and upgraded valve body that cost around 4500.00 USD.
