Default 1999 jaguar xk8 won't turn over

Hello everyone,

My 1999 jaguar xk8 will not turn over! Makes whirling sound. Had son-in-law(certified mechanic for Kia) troubleshoot problem. We are up for any suggestions on what could be the potential problem.

This is what he has checked so far and has questions about:
[LIST]
- He checked for fuel pressure - There was pressure
- Check if timing chain was in place by looking through the #1 spark plug -
It was in place
- Checked for spark in the plugs - found there were no spark in any of the
plugs. We removed all of the plugs checked for power and grounds.

His questions are:

- Does the ECM control the delivery of power to the coils?
- Or do the coils have a separate module? If so where is it located?

Need a diagram of the ignition system or schematic.

Help please! Thank you

Hi sdh218,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us, but I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble.

I have moved your post from the forum for the S-Type to the forum for the XK (X100), which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 1999 XK.

To help us understand your symptoms more clearly, can you tell us if the engine is rotating, but not starting? Or is the engine not rotating, but you hear a whirling sound (such as the starter motor)?

To answer your last question, you can download the 1999 XK Electrical Guide with all the schematics here:

http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxk1999.pdf

Regarding the coils, they all receive 12V from the Ignition Coil Relay via Purple wires with White tracer lines. The ECM grounds the coils to fire them. The Ignition Coil Relay is in the Control Module Enclosure on the right side of the engine bay.

Also, since we're a friendly group, please visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum and post an introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jag and give you a proper welcome.

Cheers,

Don

If the crank isn't turning over I would suspect the starter motor or solenoid

He said the engine makes whirling sound but doesn't have spark, so I believe it's turning over. It's always a problem when people don't use the correct terminology.

One possibility that I recall reading is that the battery may be too low. There is a minimum voltage requirement for the ECM to fire the plugs, so be sure the battery is fully charged and that it doesn't drop much below 11V when cranking.

Thank you very much all! I will pass on this info and let him check for results.

Also will stop by new member area and place formal introduction.

Sorry for wrong terminology, it is more my fault than the mechanics.

Thank you again, I will report back soon

From what I read from the original description is the cylinder wash problem. The solution is to remove the spark plugs and squirt a very small amount in each cylinder. Compression has gone ant this will restore compression and should start. Expect a lot of oil smoke at first. Suggest doing a search on cylinder wash. This can happen when the engine is started and then shut off right away or after a very short run. To solve this problem I believe Jag changed the computer to always when cold starting the engine would fast idle for a short time. I always wait until the idle drops to normal before putting the car in gear.

Is the starter turning the engine over? If it is and the engine is rotating with no compression use this procedure to get it started.

If the engine is not turning look at the two links below.

I hope this helps

I also suspect he has a bore wash by now. But according to post #1 there is no spark. All the bore wash solutions will be of no use if there is an ignition problem.

Thank you EZDriver and Gus!!!! He actually got the solution from reading a post on jagrepair.com.

The cylinder wash solved the problem and the car started.

Like I said in the introduction, you guys are the best!!!!! Can't get any better, thank you so, so much. Saved me from headache and money.

Again, my sincere thanks!!!!

I would suggest you add a can of Restore to the oil this will help in preventing another cylinder washing situation. No guarantee but has helped others.
