2.5 inch rear speaker driver
#2
Hi Scott,
A few things. 1) you may come across David Yau's excellent post about replacement rear speakers. I've already headed down that path - the speakers he talks about are no longer available anywhere.
2) if you haven't been in a flood, or bent something in frustration (ha ha), the drivers are mechanically sound. Re-cone(ing) speakers is relatively simple and, believe me, commonplace.
One of my other hobbies is home audio. Once in a while I've had to have speaker drivers repaired. I've used a gentleman who is now in Pennsylvania and owns his shop called MillerSound. As I recall his name is Bill, but a search on Millersound will bring him up.
Nothing but the highest praise of his knowledge, work, and turnaround time. Think about giving him a ring and talking about having him repair the drivers. Nothing to lose, might save you time and money if he will/can.
I couldn't tell if both the drivers need repair or just the smaller one. Hope this helps. FYI- don't trash the voice coil before talking to him, might be a lot easier to repair using it.
John

I used Dayton Audio PC68-4 2-1/2" Full-Range Poly Cone Driver 4 Ohm. They are not a direct mechanical replacement so you either need to chop some metal off the mount area of the speaker or, as I did, split the whole (black) speaker enclosure by undoing the screws and prying apart as the joint has some mastic in it, and then mount the speakers between the two halves of the enclosures. I drilled a couple of small mounting holes in each of the enclosures to fix the speakers with self tapping screws, soldered the electrical connections then reassembled. Sounds fine to me. Sorry, no pictures available.
