if they don't know, assume they haven't...just to be safe.
For 'price' averages, I always look thru www.cars.com or autotrader.com on a similar mileaged vehicle. If the tensioners CAN be verified as being replaced, count on a more valuable car, and plan to spend maybe another $1500 on her.

When I started shopping in the spring of '08, here in Canada the prices dropped significantly once the cars were 4 years old or older. I went for an '03 convertible since it had some major improvements (side air bags) as well as a 4.2 L engine. Even came with an extended warranty which saved me about $6,000 on covered repairs.

KBB says around 11k for a 2000 convertible with 60k miles. I would definitely not pay more than the low end of kbb. I have been tracking the xk8 market for quite some time and there is an absolute buyers market for this car. I would stay away from the 97-02 models due to the whole timing chain headache. My local guy charges 3k to replace chain and tensioners but that is a bit on the high end. Check out craiglook.com, this site allows you to search craigslist nationwide. There are still a lot of people (esp. dealers) who have not adjusted to recession pricing and they think they can get top dollars. Just track the market for a month and you'll see that very few people are selling and a lot of people are giving up trying to sell their cars.
