I have an unsual steering problem on my 2000 XKR ...anyone got some ideas on what it might be.
First noticed that just after hard acceleration there was a noticeable steering or suspension 'correction' ...a bit like torque steering , or I guessed a worn bush somewhere ? In fact , a bit like you were suddenly hit by a sidewind. Today I realised that even tho the car was driving straight the steering wheel was way off centre , but now that back to centred. Fluids , tyres - all good. No noises , and no steering pull in normal driving. Tyre pressures are good , and there is no steering vibration. Any thoughts ? thanks , al

"but now back to center?" you mean it centered itself?
sounds suspension or steering related. Drop it by a shop like NTB (mine has a general mechanic on staff) and see if they can diagnose it. It doesn't sound like something you would have to take to a dealer just to diagnose...at least not yet. Maybe a tech on here has heard of this. I personally, haven't.

Something is loose. When you accelerate, it shifts the weight rearward and forces the shift. When you return to steady state driving the suspension piece settles back to its proper position. The problem is diagnosing what is loose.
I think you are going to need a lift, a pry bar, and someone who is familiar with what abnormal deflection in suspension joints looks like. You could probably do some of this yourself, with the car up on jackstands. The problem here will be to recreate the weight shift in what is a pretty heavy car, with loaded and unloaded suspension pieces. I would at least try. There might be something obvious that jumps out at you like a tie rod ends, or steering bushings. gordo

Steering "way off center" that goes to "now centered" is very loose steering rack mounting bushings, or a far more serious front suspension fault. I have not seen steering rack bushings worn to that extent on an XK8, but it is certainly possible.
This symptom is common on XJS/ Series III XJ6, caused by worn steering rack mounting bushings, and the additional characteristic is big time understeer on corner entry. Have somebody look at the car who knows something, it does not sound as if it is particularly safe to drive in the interim.
