2001 Jaguar XKR transmission oil
I would like to check the oil level in my 2001 XKR's transmission, but I know that there is no dipstick. I've done some research and found out that:
* The gearbox is from Mercedes benz W5A580. Jaguar calls it ZF5HP24.
* The dipstick can be bought in Mercedes dealership part No. 140589152100 or Jaguar original paert No. 307-379
* The oil should be used Shell ATF 3403-M115 or at mercedes Dealership with oil A001989210310
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe you are correct except that the MB transmission is not the ZF5HP24. There have been several posts about adding the dipstick to the XKR/MB transmission. It is usually available on eBay.

XKR Dipstick
I just had my trans oil replaced along with filter, pan gasket and sleeve to the electrical connector on the side of the pan. The connector was leaking and thats what started the whole process.
I bought the filter, pan gasket and sleeve from Jaguar but would have saved money by buying them at Mercedes. I ended up buying the dipstick and oil from MB. My question is: the dipstick tool when inserted into the filler tube sticks out about 12". It does not seat all the way into the tube. It is the same MB part no. you listed. I was going to leave the dipstick in after the oil change and do away with the plug but I cannot do that now.
Is the dipstick supposed to have that extra length after insertion into the tube. I plan on returning the tool because i'm not sure of the accuracy of the measurement.

Also yes the dipstick is extra long to fit multiple applications. as long as you fully seat it in the tube "push it in till it comes to a natural stop" you are all set to take your measurement.

1997 XK8 Transmission Access from above?
Is there any way to check the fluid or access the dipstick area from above the engine or does it need to be on a lift? I have a 97 XK8 and it just started having problems going into gear so I thought I should check the fluid level - it goes into reverse fine (automatic) but seems like it is slipping into other gears.
On my 1999 XJR I can access the dipstick from above towards the back of the engine but I cannot seem to locate anything like that on the XK8

Two completely different gearboxes. Forget about checking the XK8 with a dipstick.
When you check the supercharged MB gearbox oil level the temp is important.
If you are using a data link connector (DLC) with PDU,WDS,IDS,Autoenginuity etc. PLEASE remember that when checking the W5A580 (MB722.6) the fluid temp is read with the gearbox in R or D (otherwise you are reading the engine temp).
I just did this last week.

Home made Dip stick $1.00 or less
I took a long Zip Tie, painted the cold and hot marks on it (at the levels stated in earlier reply) and used it to check the level after changing the fluid. It works as good as the $100 tool. Just can't leave it in after servicing, but you can check it when ever you need to by leaving tool in trunk. Also, I bought 8 qts from MB at $17 a quart! Drained it, filled it, drove it, drained it again and refilled to try to get as much old fluid out as possible. The MB dealer does this proceedure for $600!

2001 Jaguar XKR Transmission question
My baby has been leaking tranny fluid all winter, onto my pad in the backyard. I have purchased the replacement fluid and filter, since I am going to have to get under there anyway. From all I have read, it sounds like the likely leak point is the "Electrical connector". I have searched for the part number for this item all over these forums and haven't found it. Can someone point me in the right direction? I have also seen mention of some kind of sleeve? If anyone has some in depth info, I would be very grateful! I have also purchased the MB dipstick and an IR temp gauge, so, I am ready for when the weather gets good enough to tackle this project. I would also like a torgue pattern for the bolts, if someone has that info. I have lots of info, but still had these questions.

There is a lot of discussion about fluids. I will not attempt to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. I just know that the research I have done shows the spec for the fluid for MY car is Shell ATF 3403 M115, according to this site: http://www.nordiques.com/pieces/imag...huiletrans.pdf
Valvoline MaxLife ATF is compatible. It should be available from your local Auto supply store for about $16/gallon. I wouldn't take my advice. Just to cover myself.

Mercedes recommends the 236.14 as these are downwards compatible (so for the 236.10 which was the Shell ATF 3403 M115)
That Valvoline is not in the list, doesn't make it incompatible, it only means that this oil hasn't been thru the approval/certification.
I went for Mobil ATF 134, got it pretty cheap also.
