2001 XK8 Dash rattle
#21
I finally found my rattle. I searched and searched. I tightened everything. I had the dash apart when I removed my driver's side fan motor and installed the temp and oil pressure real gauges I looked everywhere. Still nothing. Then, this weekend I finished up the suspension work on my "S". During the test drive I heard nearly the same rattle from the rear. What-in-the-world! Did the XK8 rattle decide to move over to the "S"? I checked all the torque numbers on the S and everything turned out perfect except for the driver's side center nut on the strut. It was 16 ft lbs and not 21 ft lbs. I tightened it correctly and the test drive was rattle free. Now, back to the XK8. I tested both of the front strut nuts. Driver's side - fine. Passenger's side, 18 ft lbs not 21. I tightened the nut and NO RATTLE! Yippee! Finally.

Your upper shock mount (the donut) is mostly likely deteriorating as they are want to do. As it crumbles, the fit loosens, and the shock piston threaded rod end knocks against the edge of the hole in the bay . Keep an eye on it as I suspect you'll hear that knocking again and it will signal its time to replace the shock mounts. gordo

GordoCatCar, You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! Both upper shock mounts were showing deterioration similar to the type of old Styrofoam that is left out in the sun. When I was tightening the top nut I was wondering why I did not replace them previously, just as I did in my XK and S. I had no answer for myself. Sad, when you don't have an answer for your own question. :-( The parts are on order and should arrive in a few days. :-)

It was the upper shock mounts!
Same problem here 3 months ago,
check your upper shock mounts in engine compartment above each front wheel, if the are bad the shock bolt can tap against the firewall supports and telescope into the dash board.
Sounds exactly like it is coming from inside the dash but it is really emanating from engine bay area specifically the shock mount towers and the sound telescopes to the firewall, thus sounds like it is coming from inside dash area.
Check to see if shock bolt is in the middle or askew of the tower area, maybe even touching the side and tapping on metal sides.
If the are not in middle you need new shock mounts.
Good luck and remember

I had a similar problem with my 2000 XK8 convertible. I found by pushing front of the dash down away from the windscreen solved the problem.
They were rubbing together. I found a piece of matching paper (in my case a brown paper bag), folding it into a thick square and pushing it
into the gap between the two pieces and squeak is gone.
