2002 XKR Airbag code
Hey everyone, I'm still alive!
So last time I was arguing with my vehicle regarding the faulty driver airbag system as it had failed the state safety inspection (US MOT of sorts). It continually threw a fault code claiming there was a fault in the system. The local repair shop (no Jaguar dealer local to me within 70 miles) couldn't figure it out. They kept saying the airbag and modules had to be replaced, but no I disagreed with their assertions. Based on what I was seeing it was something to do with the driver side seat track position sensor as Jaguar/Land Rover can on occasion be quite literal when it comes to fault codes. Every time a mechanic would look at it they'd say everything seemed fine and the seat was firmly fixed to the floor.
So yes to say the least I was baffled, and as some of you are aware I deal with some severe spine issues (Stupid younger days of unsanctioned racing/motorcycle-misbehavior/genetics...you name it) and a penchant for ignoring my doctors orders, I dug in anyway. ((hey I'm a stubborn donkey I admit it!))
So I figured I'd pull the seat completely out of the car to determine if the electrics were still viable. I moved the seat forward all the way on the seat track, and then lowered the seat front & rear heights... seat flopped right off the track!
The seat was not firmly bolted to the floor! Yep, no one had bothered to actually check to see if the seat track bolts were tight, they just gripped & moved the seat around to see if it moved at all. The seat height at the time was all the way up in the front and some in the rear, therefore it was sort of squishing the seat into the center console and surrounding trims making it appear as though the seat was firmly attached when it in fact was not! Once I properly anchored the dumb thing the fault code cleared, and the vehicle passed her inspection and she's legally allowed to be driven once again. Matter of fact she's been driven several times since the repair, not more issues to speak of. Now it's just in need of a minor tune up and some other bits. I still thoroughly love this car!
