2003 XKR - HID headlamps & door mirrors.
Morning all,
It's been a while since I've posted on here .... Sorry.
What with this awful pandemic, becoming grandparents - twice- each to our twin sons and their wives, generally keeping myself busy, and oh yes, buying another XK, this time a 2003 XKR and then thinking about and not relishing the thought of selling my very well sorted & cherished 1998 XX8.
Anyway, since buying the XKR at a very reasonable price may I add, it does have a few niggles, which I'm working through, both mechanically and with the help of SDD v131.02.
The thing that's really making me scratch my head at the moment, is the following:
The XKR has the factory fitted HID headlamps, which work fine as headlamps and illuminate the road head very well.
The problem I'm having is that the left hand (Nearside UK) headlamp doesn't go through it's auto height calibration when switched on.
The right hand side works perfectly; dips then rises and settles at the correct level for where the car is parked.
To back this up, the SDD software confirms that the ADHLS -L (headlamp levelling module - Left) won't communicate, so obviously has either an internal or connection problem.
Question - where abouts are the ADHLS modules fitted in the 2003 XK?
I've scoured the internet, fleabay and many forums to try to find out more on the ADHLS modules, but they just don't seem to exist on the XK's.
The only thing I can think of is that it's all part of the ballast control module that sits underneath the headlamp, but I really can't see a very high voltage module, combined with a 'normal' module, as that seems a recipe for disaster.
Any suggestions .....
Finally, the other electrickery niggle is folding door mirrors. They both fold in OK, but won't fold back out again.
The control switch has been taken apart, all contact cleaned and put back together OK.
All the mirror movements work OK on both mirrors, meaning that the all the switch contact work as they should.
The SDD initial sweep confirms that both door modules are OK, but sometimes, only sometimes, reports no communication with the driver's seat module, even though the seat module was recently sent off for repair and was returned with a 'clean bill of health'.
Again. any thought on why the door mirrors won't fold back out again?
Many thanks.
Stay safe one and all.
Tony

The Ballast and Headlamp Levelling Module is a combined component on the HID headlamp (see item 2):
I'd expect the intermittent fault in Seat Module communication is a cracked track on the module board allowing slight flexing as you sit/move on the seat. I think the Seat Module also plays a part in door mirror control so the fault may be connected. Others with more recent experience of this model will know more.

Hello Graham,
Thank you for the ADHLS module information ........ Really helpful thanks.
I just now need to see if it's a wiring or module fault, as the seller told me that he'd replaced the ballast just prior to me buying the Jag from them (private enthusiast sale) ....... Hmmmm.
As for the seat module, I did mention that I'd sent it off for repair; some track repair work was done, also a component with 'dry solder joints', was re-soldered.
The unit was fully tested & passed, then sent back with a 2 year guarantee. The person who did the repairs has many years service under his belt and has a 100% feedback score, so I believe his work is genuine.
More SDD work to be done me thinks.
|I might even try to re-programme the seat module, just incase it is a replacement module that was never re-programmed for the Jag ....... Another Hmmm.
