Default 2004 xk8 window gap issue

Good morning all!

I recently purchased a XK8 with a small window gap issue pictured below (apologies for the dirt, we just had rain fall which carried a bunch of desert dust in South England yesterday). It'll be gleaming again after a lunch time car wash today.

To try to solve this gap issue, I've taken the door panel off to check if any nuts were loose I could tighten to realign the window but nothing seemed to be the culprit. Everything was tightened if it was loose, regardless.

Could it be a wrongly angled window guiding rod? When i looked at it, i couldnt see any signs of it having moved or been damaged, but I am struggling to figure out what could have caused this misalignment. Perhaps the entire electric window motor has moved or shifted? Again, not sure how that could've happened.

I have adjusted the screw that moves the window closer or further away from the door frame just in case, and that didnt change the gap.

Once the window is up and the door closed, I can just about slide the window back to the correct position by using my hands and sliding / pushing the window back towards the rear of the car to realign it so there is no gap, so there is play in the window allowing it to move somewhat, but it isn't easy by any means and not feasible to do daily.

One more thing to note, possibly unrelated but when the window is closing there is a slight sticking and slowing about 70% of the way up before window motor pushes through, and closes the window completely. I have made this slightly less of a problem by spraying WD40 inside the door frame onto the window motor and gears, once the internal door card was taken off, and that helped the slowing and sticking of the motor / window, although I'd imagine this may only be a temporary fix. Not sure.

Any advice would be appreciated. The window noise caused by the gap at 70mph+ is a bit much!

Here's the assembly:

Alignment (or misalignment) is usually caused by loose or incorrectly adjusted guide runners (arrowed in red) or door glass guide arrowed below:

Graham thank you so much for that, extremely helpful.

Do you know how I would get access to the mechanisms involved? When I removed the door card, it was still unaccessible. Should i remove the speaker, will that give me access to where I need to tweak, do you know?

My thanks again.

There isn't much room to move in there!

YES - you need the speaker out to access the door glass guide. As a newbie, you won't be able to download the attached PDF from the Workshop Manual so I'll send it to the email address you have registered with the forum.

The relevant JTIS extract (Rear Quarter Window Regulator Motor Vehicles With: Convertible Top 86.25.11) exceeds forum attachment limits so here it is as JPG's:

Indi, the fact your window is also cockeyed makes me suspect a slipping bolt. See bottom right arrow pointing to this bolt.
Graham did a great explanation. If you need more details I have the jaguar document on window alignment- just ask.

HI John,

Thank you, I will try moving the position using that bolt.

If you could also send me the document that would be great.

Thank you

Graham, John,

Fantastic news, I adjusted the bolt as per John's picture and boom, the window is perfect. It juddering and slowing down when winding the window up has been completrly irradiated too.
I am over the moon and cannot thank you enough!!! The car is now officially perfect.

Some pictures if anyones interested

I present the Batmobile with a perfectly aligned window 🤣

Thanks for the follow-up! She looks great!

File this fix away in your mind for the future. That bolt may someday slip again. DON'T do what I did the 1st time I saw it, in a stroke of utter brilliance I pressed up button figuring its straighten out. . . I can't describe the feeling of sitting there watching your entire window shatter into a billion pieces (it did seem to be in slow motion though!).
