Message center
Can you cycle through categories:
Elapsed miles
Instant mileage
Avg speed . . .?
I had a wire get loose at bottom of turn signal stalk that prevented selection at times. Ez solder to fix, but I can't tell if you battling user selected messages or system status displays.
If the later, if sure be interested if the red warning light works when text display doesn't (open hood/bonnet; open drivers door . . .)
Guess we need more details friend.

Dim? Are you looking at it in daylight with headlights on? That for example, is the one drawback i have using auto headlights as daytime running lights (pretty much a safety necessity with the dam anthracite gray paint job) headlights on = message display dims a lot!
I don't think the rotary dim switch on steering column affects message display.
I am sure your wires are ok. Bad connection <=> no display, never = dim display partner.
So, now I understand much better. Message display works, just very dim. Let's eliminate headlights (or running lights) on first.
If you look and see: no, stalk set to off, just for the hell of it do 2 things:
1. Press front fog light on button. If it shows on, car thinks running lights are switched on!
2. Start car. Look at running lights/headlights. On or off? Stranger things have happened with failed headlight switches.
