3D Printer Technology

Hello Guys
I have spent countless hours in the past few years on Google trying to find little replacement plastic parts for my 99 XK.
The interior plastic bits on the early cars were terrible useless brittle bits that broke and you just can not get them anymore.
I watched a car resto show today where they were doing up a Williams Clio and the two little holding clips for the engine cover were missing. The guy went to a 3D printing machine place and got them made for 50 quid. It sounds a lot but I think it is very exciting new tech that can do wonders for our classics and get them perfect again.
Has anyone used this 3D tech for parts, its not just plastic, apparently they can recreate metal bits as well. Incredible 😅
😀👍👍

Did bye a 3D printer, standard consumer ~200EUR/USD, does the job for standard materials(PLA etc), but it does not print ABS/Nylon and other more exotic materials(at higher temps) at least not without some modifications, but there are carbon reinforced PLA's that prints at "low" temps(havent tried those) so might be doable to do strong prints with a standard entry level printer. Printing itself is not all that hard to learn, a few youtube tutorials to get the basics of the slicer software and you are on your way(I use Cura, and it has a very neat function, fuzzy skin, which gives the printed surface a uneven surface, if tuned somewhat on the very small scale, 0.1-0.2mm, you get that fuzzy factory plastic surface texture to your printed surface). What is hard though is modelling, you have to learn some CAD software and that is not something you do in a afternoon. I have used Freecad and that worked well for one part(posted here on the forum somewhere) but not good at all for more complicated "surface modelling", but there are for ex. Solid Edge and Fusioin 360, free for hobbyist user, those might be worth a try
Cheers!
Cheers!

Totaly agree. The interior plastics on the X100 were complete chocolate box garbage. It was one of the corners cut by Ford's accountants to save money on our lovely XK's in the 90's. The bits were brittle and broke and impossible to find now. Anyone with a printing 3D business to recreate these parts in a more robust form will have a very lucrative and successful market and business model now IMVHO 😀 👍 End of

I have been making parts using CAD & 3D printing for several months. What is it that you are trying to make?

I think It is time to bring this back. I know over on the X300, a few internal parts are made, but I would like to get a list of plans out there to allow others to make. I am looking for an LJA6221DE and don't see it out there but looking at purchasing a 3D camera to make it. I looked at Terry's for this part; they want $734. Everywhere else, you can get them, but the tabs are missing, or they are just so brittle that as soon as you put it on, it will break. There is not too much to this part, and should be pretty straightforward.
Also, is there anyone that has made a mod for this? Able to attach it so that you don't need the tabs but secured it. For you ex-military, 100 MPH tape is not an option.

I am still surprised someone hasn't made a small business out of printing hard to find/no longer available Jaguar plastic parts. Same holds true for most older foreign cars, even the German ones. I suspect it would become more than a hobby and pay for the equipment needed fairly quickly.
And yes, this is a challenge for someone out there.

A couple of questions. I am not sure I am too keen on the chrome yet. Is there anyone that has it that prefers it over the black? I might be more inclined to the same concept but in black, maybe with black caps over the screw holes.
Your links point to UK eBay, and it has chrome rings. Do you have something without the rings? Again, to me, chrome belongs outside of the car.
