Default 96 XK8 engine fault, no codes

Hi guys,

driving my car today it was running really nicely, as I came into town, I dropped into 2nd manually, then up the gears but 4th was hard to get into. It came up gearbox error as I moved back into drive. No noises.

I pulled up at some traffic lights and decided to restart to clear the code, silly me. It was hard to restart and gearbox fault was gone, but engine fault was on - orange light.
drove home. Parked. Turned off and now won’t restart. Says engine fault.

checked with my code reader and no codes. Nothing.

any ideas?

thanks Matt.

You should read the TCM for faults. The engine might not have faults?

I would scan EVERY MODULE on the CAN bus.(your generic OBDII reader will NOT read all the modules.

I can't help with NON Jaguar diagnostic devices because I worked at the dealer and I have 3 WDS and 2 IDS.

There are many devices that will read the modules and there are posts from members that can do this.

Hopefully someone will post about the readers that will work.

Matt,

You were lucky to make it home!

Have a look at this thread in General Tech Help for a (lengthy) discussion on recommended scan tools:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...-%2A%2A-33347/

An alternative is to use an independent Jaguar specialist who can run a diagnostic session on the vehicle for you. The nearest appears to be East Kent Automotive in Canterbury.

I’ll take a look at scan tools. But a bit of google research is telling me that there are lots of tools out there, but no confidence that they will read the TCM module rather than just engine codes, which I can do at the moment.

Also, I can’t move the car, since it won’t start so a test session won’t be possible, even if the place is open with the current situation.

There are folks on this list much more familiar with the early car, but the early ECUs were built during the infamous capacitor plague era, so it might be useful to open up the ECU box and check the circuit board for signs of burst/leaking capacitors. These ECUs can typically be rebuilt if needed.

To your question, folks mention iCarSoft and Foxwell. Check eBay/Amazon. Be sure to get a Jaguar/Land Rover model (not just OBDII) and that it supports the early cars (some scanners start at 2001). FWIW, some (like the Foxwell) are basically just a hardware device with a memory card, meaning additional brand support can be downloaded later (for a fee). Or get a used model and download the JLR software yourself.

ECU has been rebuilt.
Did some driving around yesterday and it seems that gearbox is at fault and the cable on the selector needs to be adjusted. I think it’s the shift from 4th to Drive. That, I think, is what’s throwing the error.

after changing from 3rd to 4th to drive the gearbox seemed to get confused, didn’t know what gear it was in, didn’t give me any gears at all, just whatever I was in, threw up gearbox error and when I got home, it then showed engine fault and the gear indicators (red lights) weren’t illuminated. let it cool down, restart no problem, no error, drives fine if I don’t use the manual side of the box.

so going to try adjusting the cable today and see what that does for me.

The gearbox fault will be triggered if the D4 micro-switch is faulty or fell off the mount and you use the 'manual-side' of the selector.

I have also seen a broken round plastic actuator disc for the D4 switch cause the fault.

Adjusted the cable and all seems good now. The gearbox selector is super difficult to get to. But got it done in the end.
