Thanks Bob for the warning, when I finally found the mark and no pistons were on top I thought that can't be right but it was the only place that the locking tool would fit. I then realized that that the timing was built in (as it were ) to the lock and cams. No timing lights and marks like the old days. Total disaster though as when I checked the exhaust valve clearances they anywhere between .008 to .013 + back to the machine shop and another or more weeks lost. I had not installed the heads yet, that was a good thing. I had a valve head break off years ago on a mark 2, too much valve clearance, took out the whole engine, don't want that again. Thanks again for your help

when valves are reseated by machining etc. the lash or clearance becomes a less amount, correct! The shims then have to be adjusted to give a clearance between the bottom of the cam lob and the shim cup with the VALVES SEATED SHOULD BE IN. .2MM or .0078 and .25mm to.3mm or .010 to .011 for the exhaust. How far out of these numbers do you feel it would be safe to run. Bearing in mind that too little will burn the valve over time and too much will beat the head off. T
