adding Z Max to oil in '97 XK8
#22
Here is what happened w/Zmax and they did not win, they settled and offered refunds.
The zMax win against an FTC settlement for misleading advertising.
The Federal Trade Commission filed suit in a U.S. District Court that sought to halt false and misleading advertising for zMax auto additives and which asked the court to order refunds to consumers who bought the products. The agency alleged that enhanced performance claims for the product were unsubstantiated, that tests cited to support performance claims actually demonstrated that motor oil treated with zMax produced more than twice as much bearing corrosion than motor oil alone, and that the three different products - an engine additive, a fuel line additive and a transmission additive - were all actually mineral oil tinted with food colouring.
However, on 20th March 2003, Speedway Motorsports Inc. (TRK) and Oil-Chem Research Corp., the manufacturers of zMax, announced that they had settled their dispute with the FTC. The Concord, North Carolina-based Speedway said that the dispute was concerning the advertising of zMAX Power System. Marylaurel E. Wilks, VP and general counsel said, "We at Speedway Motorsports are very pleased that the staff of the Federal Trade Commission has specifically confirmed that Oil-Chem can continue to make the following claims in its advertising and promotion of zMAX:".

- zMAX increases horsepower,
- zMAX dissipates engine heat,
- zMAX helps to improve or restore gas mileage and reduce emissions in older cars, by virtue of reducing engine deposits,
- zMAX helps to maintain gas mileage and emissions in newer cars, by virtue of reducing engine deposits,
- zMAX helps to reduce engine wear on engine valve-stems and guides and piston rings and skirts, by virtue of reducing engine deposits,

Yes- in the days where we used to 'get out and get under' spending three hours fixing for every one hour of driving. Thankfully that, and hand crank starters, are distant memories.

So what do you reckon PattertiXK8, question answered?
or none the wiser?
mike66:
Does the Restore help with the compression and blowby reduction?
Regarding stripping my heads to inspect the bores and pistons, i considered that to try to determine if i had any rust in my bores, from accidentally getting water in them while cleaning the block.
But i discovered something called a camera scope, which, if they're any good, might be a tad easier
Asssuming the engine lasts long enough for me to get round to it of course.

My thoughts on this are use a quality full synthetic oil of the correct viscosity and change it about every 6-7K miles or so. Don't add anything to it.

Or even more revolutionary, use regular dino oil and change it at the interval recommended by the owner's manual. Throwing away perfectly good oil at only 6-7K miles, especially synthetic, is a tremendous waste.

On restore, yes ive done before and after tests on blowby and compression. In every case it brought them up and leveled them off.
On zmax i get it free and 8 yrs ago i put it in my jag on oil change. Drove a 1800 miles trip and succeeded in losing 2 mpg!!!! Wtf. So when i got back i changed the oil again and left it out. The 2 mpg came back!!. Now to be fair it was "reformulated" a few years later after the ftc crap, soooo. Lets try again. Yep still lost those same 2mpg on the freeway which came back when i left it out next lof...yeah i dont use it even though i get it free form your own opinion from that one

I wouldn't argue with him either mike. Especially after these comments.
It seems like if any oil additive is going to help an engine, particularly a pre 2001 Nikasil lined one, it's a case of forget the ZMax, and add the Restore instead.
