Anyone go for an aftermarket alarm system on their xks? to avoid the high costs of jaguar remotes for the stock alarm system. I got a quote of $350 at local Jaguar dealer, and a $85 programming fee.... ***********
Is there any reason I should stray away from aftermarket alarm for my xk8?

There's more reasons why you shouldn't stray! The security system is complex and retrofitting an aftermarket solution could introduce more issues than it solves.
Remotes are frequently sold on the likes of eBay at a fraction of the cost of a new one from the dealer. The thing to watch out for is you get the right one for your model year.
Keys cannot be programmed by an owner - Remotes can be programmed by an owner. You do NOT need to go to the dealer to program a Remote to your vehicle.
