Airbag warning light

Model and Year details in your forum Signature would be a very good idea.
There's a huge difference between the simple Airbag installation on early 4.0 litre XK8's and the complex SRS (Supplementary Restraint System) fitted to the later 4.2 litre models.

Hi 2e0wdj,
I had to a buy a 2nd hand instrument cluster as my temperature gauge had also spiked (jump started the car).
With the new instrument cluster the airbag warning light actually flashed the warning code (21) before going to a solid on light. Which then the Jag specialist used the find the problem. It was a dodgy fuse and dodgy wiring going into the main airbag control module next to the steering column.
Cost me about an hour and half's labour and solved the problem. From what I can tell from reading the forums, it's 99% dodgy wiring rather than a dodgy module or airbag.
Good luck.

Hi Jandreu
You were spot on with the fuse, Fuse 4, 10 amp (red), UK car, drivers side fusebox, 4th down from the top on the right side column.
It was blown, I have replaced it but the airbag light is still on and I have checked to ensure there is voltage both sides of the fuse while it is installed to be sure it hadn't just blown again.
Thanks very much for your suggestion. I guess I will have to keep digging.

Well the saga continues. I took the jag for its mot today and she failed on only the airbag light being on.
It illuminates during the ignition on bulb check then go out. 2 seconds later its back on permanently.
The 10 amp fuse is ok. It's a 1997 car so only has the basic airbag system not the later full blown srs system.
I've had a quick poke round it this evening with the glove box removed.
I found the white 4 pin interrogation socket behind the passenger side kick panel but I can't find the actual airbag control module. Does anyone know where this is?
The manual shows it on the opposite side to the steering wheel, under the corner of the window next to the BCM, I found the BCM but no sign of the airbag module.
I've done a hard reset but this makes no difference.
Can anyone else shed some light for me?
Many thanks
Wayne.

Still on
Well chaps this is what I have done so far.
1, Found the airbag blue box bolted up on the pillar above my right foot.
2, Removed it to gain access to everything.
3, Pulled the plugs out of the bottom of the box and checked for main 12v supply, back up 12v supply, ground connection. correct signals on the right and left crash sensors, disconnected the two airbags and inserted 2.5 ohm resistors in the sockets bypassing the shorting bars.
You can measure the resistors down at the blue box plugs so it checks the wiring and the steering cassette.
All look ok.
Ordered a replacement blue box and installed. put fuse back in with the termination resistors connected.
Airbag light still comes on approx 3-5 seconds after the check light routine.
4, checked the air bag resistances with a high impedance meter and both are within stated specs (0.7 to 4 ohms).
passenger airbag is 1.7 ohms and the steering one is 2.1 ohms.
Anyone else got any ideas?
Thanks
Wayne

You would have to rewire the light with something like this:-

Thanks for the box info.
I have ordered a couple of replacement front impact sensors as well. They will be here today.
V8JAG, The early jags system doesn't flash the light to give code error messages.
When I turn on the ignition, the first illumination is the bulb check 2 second. Once that has finished the instrument pack then takes the order from the airbag system to illuminate continuously.
I,m trying to find out why it is sending that fail command to the instrument pack.
I'm guessing that the correct signal from the airbag is probably some sort of pulse on/off sequence that the instrument pack looks at to keep the airbag light off.
If it sees it missing or permanently on it illuminates the fault lamp.
I'll keep trying as this thread will probably be useful one day to someone else.
Keep the ideas coming and thanks for reading.

fingers crossed
Well it looks like it was one of the front impact sensors.
I changed them out today and we seem good to go.
Just to let you know, at first I just plugged the new ones in and left them draped over the radiator to test.
This just caused the airbag blue box to start bleeping at me.
I then screwed them in with the 3 screws each and this time the test was good. No alarm or dash warning light.
I've spent this evening put the cars dashboard back together and its off to the MOT man in the morning (fingers crossed).
Thanks to everyone for their time and support.
