To all those that get check lights....
.... when you come here and say you have one and ask for help, the first thing you are asked from the crowd is WHAT ARE THE CODES.
If you have a smartphone get an app like "Torque" and then buy the accompanying adapter from ebay, all of it cost about 10 bucks for the correct set up (there are more costly things like this out there but some is just overkill). That way you can get your own codes read at ANYTIME and other fun real time info from your car and can be used on most any other car with OBDII from about 1996 frwrd. No more runs to the local parts shop, etc. And you can then come here with codes in hand to ask folks for help from there.

Just to clarify, the above Bluetooth tool will work with Android Phones and the Torque App. For iPhone users like myself, you need a WiFi version of the tool. I use the Dash Command app on my iPhone, and it works great.

It was hard at first how to figure out to get the bluetooth on my phone to connect, and at times it is a bit finicky to get it to connect but is good setup.
I plug the adapter into the port first, there is a red light I think that comes on, start the car and then get the connection going on the phone of choice and there ya go.

I don't own a cell phone of any kind or tablet so I got one of these:
UltraGauge OBDII Scan tool & Information Center
And it doubles as a set of configurable gauges...

See if this information helps Welcome to PLX Kiwi WiFi Homepage - www.kiwiwifi.com ( English Version )
You know that all you need is a small plug in OBDII code reader to read the most common codes aprox $30.00 +/- a few dollars.
I use the UltraGauge in my S-Type but did do well in my 99xk8. You will need to set that up correctly.

I can confirm that at least this wifi scanner works flawlessly with my iPhone 5s (iOS 8.1.1). No manual fiddling around with networks/subnets, either - the phone just found the scanner as a wifi network straight off.
I've been quite happy with DashCommand too. Nice little app.
Cheers.

I had that problem at first. I am using the app called Engine Link. Then I found instructions on Youtube. First plug the reader into the OBDII port. In the Engine Link app I have to set the Adapter IP Address to 192.168.0.10 and Port Number 35000. And don't forget to go into the iPhone setting and switch your wifi to the "network" established by the adapter.

For Iphone, I've used engine link and dash command, and in my opinion dash command is far better.
Dash command accesses far more data fields: Engine link won't give you lambda readings, for example.
edit: sorry I have gotten myself confused. For Engine link substitute "Rev", another app which I used after finding Engine link to be pretty poor.
Note for iphone you need a wifi dongle, not a bluetooth one. As stated above the iphone bluetooth doesn't work with the elm327 adaptors.
I used one like this:
