Alpine GPS DVD for 2001 XKR
I have a 2001 XKR with the Alpine GPS (small screen) built in. My current DVD is Alpine part # BM9JG91F which pretty good coverage of the lower 48 + Canada. I will be moving to Hawaii soon, and this disk doesn't cover Hawaii. Is a Hawaii disk available, and if so, where do I get it?
My other car is a 2004 XJ8 and the disk that I have doesn't cover Hawaii, but according to the Navteq website, their latest version does.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Mike

Small Island, lots of roads
Matt: I know that Hawaii is small compared to Texas, it is probably even small compared to Houston. The car, however, is my wife's, and she once missed San Diego on I-5, only realizing she was lost when she saw the sign saying "International Border Ahead". I realize that you can't get seriously lost in Hawaii, but if you ever traveled the Hana Highway in Maui, you wouldn't want to have to make a U-turn!! Anyway, I have mild OCD, and I can't stand the thought of thousands of dollars worth of equipment sitting in the car idle. As an aside, I just spoke to the service advisor at Jaguar of Honolulu, and he says that he never saw an Alpine GPS system in a Jaguar, and in fact he never saw any OEM GPS in a Jag before about the 2008 model year, which is about when Navteq updated their disks to include Hawaii.

More on the saga
Jaguar customer support told me to contact Alpine technical support. Alpine said essentially "why me?" Apparently, Alpine supplies to software to Jaguar who then contracts with Navteq to produce the disks. Jaguar must feel that there are not enough owners of the small screen Alpine systems to justify the expense of a new disk. Considering that these units were used in their most expensive models (the XK/XKR and the XJ Series), I believe that this is very poor customer service. Does anyone know the e-mail or phone # of some Jaguar Exec in either the US or UK that we could complain to? Maps are only available for 2007 and 2008 XK's, but models dating back to at least 2001 had built-in systems. A small customer revolt may have some effect.

I have had my share of frustrating conversations with jag customer service, and their supervisors. Their response was idiotic at times, once advising me that I can always buy a portable gps, like a TomTom!...really!?.. NO SH**!!! Another was," technology moves on so we should not be expected to provide for an outdated item" One of my arguments has been about making, and releasing, a 2005 xkr with a map disc that is from 2003!? So, let me get this straight, you produce a 90+k car with a disc that is outdated from the get go and you won't rectify the problem, WTF? Its pretty much " Oh well, sorry nothing we can do" If anybody has been able to reason with them about this matter please let us know!

My system is USA only and I need Canada too. I'm SOL just like you. I'm not going to pay $200 for someones E-bay home made copy. I've got a TomTom unit that I use when I'm not going to travel on "main" roads. For a $80,000 car the support sucks.

Sorry, I can't do that little check for you...the car needs the factory deck hooked up, and I've got a wire broke on the harness...so can't reconnect it to run the NAV. If you want, I can ship you a backup version of my disc...and see if Hawaii is on the maps. Then, you can decide what to do with it from there.

How did you get the 2003 in your 2001 XKR? My '04 XKR came with a 2001/2002 disc. Are we sure the #BM9JG91F is the absolute latest disk for the Alpine system. My 2001 disc #BM9JU91E only has 6 Provinces on it. cheers...bob

My wife wouldn't be a happy camper if I got rid of the Leaper and if she's not happy......

By the way, on a related subject, when the nav is operating is there no way to toggle between the nav screen and the clock? In other words, to get the clock face back I have to hit the on/off button and then hit on again to get the clock.
