Another solution to the P0455 Fault Code
I just spent two years trying to track down this reportedly common problem on our cars. I did like most owners do. Change the gas cap, put the old one back on, clean the gas cap seal, turn it hard to ensure it is on tightly, reset the code numerous times hoping that it would go away… After reading many posts I decided to put it up on stands and have a look at the two rectangular black boxes (charcoal canisters) underneath. I expected to see a deteriorated hose leading to the canister close valve or rust particles in the canister close valve itself. I found neither. I was a little baffled when I took all the parts out onto the bench and everything was fine.
Upon closer inspection there was a gap of about three inches in the corner of the right hand side carbon canister. The tear was three inches long but very thin and hard to notice. The bracket itself was bent. Sure enough, when I took the black box out and blew into it (the other hole plugged) the air came directly out of the corner. Talk about your gross leaks. My conclusion is that a jack or ramp at the dealer had bumped the metal bracket enough to tear a corner away. Uncommon solution to a common problem on our cars.
