Like XKRacer says, most useful is to fit a switch to the centre console.

I rarely listen to the radio but have no problems with static or otherwise. I am in a major city so that could explain it. CD's are the way I go anyways. If I wanted to put something more useful in I'd do a receiver for my cell phone, bluetooth etc, I can get radio, police radio, internet radio, etc etc etc off of that.

I would like to replace the stock antenna with an automotive shark fin antenna, but don't know if an amplifier would be required. Has anyone considered this a viable alternative ?

You could just clip the antenna wire and be fine. That is essentially what the switch does, it just gives you the option to flip it back and have the antenna work. 99% of the time my switch is off, but it is nice to be able to flip it on, and really, it takes so little time and cost to throw a switch in while you are at it, I don't quite understand the reluctance.
